Knowledge about the immune responses against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, particularly regarding the function of eosinophils, has been steadily emerging recently. There exists controversy regarding the implications of eosinophils in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)'s pathology. We report a retrospective cohort study including the comparison of leukocyte counts in COVID-19 patients, considering the outcomes of recovery ( = 59) and death ( = 60).

Knowledge of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) activity and the molecules identified that regulate its function in infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms is crucial to understanding how the intensity of the inflammatory response can be controlled in the course of infections. In recent years many reports have described small molecular weight synthetic and natural compounds, proteins, and interference RNA with the potential to regulate the GSK3β activity and reduce the deleterious effects of the inflammatory response. Our goal in this review is to summarize the most recent advances on the role of GSK3β in the inflammatory response caused by bacteria, bacterial virulence factors (i.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine whether the TyG (Triglycerides and Glucose Index) or TG/HDL (Triglycerides to HDL Ratio) is a better predictor of insulin resistance in Mexican schoolchildren aged 5-9, examining both overweight-obese and normal weight groups.
  • Conducted at a Family Medicine Unit in Morelia, Mexico, researchers collected data on BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood samples for various health markers from 201 children.
  • Results showed that the TyG index had higher diagnostic accuracy for identifying cardiometabolic issues compared to TG/HDL; specifically, 49.5% of overweight-obese children had hypertriglyceridem

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia of clinical significance; it increases the risk of mortality due to stroke. The mechanisms behind cerebral thromboembolism in AF are associated with a prothrombotic state, demonstrated by higher levels of von Willebrand Factor (vWF), a multimeric glycoprotein that plays a crucial role in platelet adhesion and aggregation and it has been proposed as a biomarker of endothelial dysfunction. Plasma vWF levels are elevated in patients with nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation (NVAF) associated to the presence of cardiovascular risk factors.
