Opportunities to improve asthma and COPD prevention and care: insights from the patient journey obtained through focus groups.

Background: The healthcare experiences of patients hold valuable insights for improving the quality of services related to their well-being. We therefore invited and explored the perspectives of patients living with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on their interaction with the systems supporting health, in order to identify opportunities to improve services to prevent, treat and manage these conditions.

Methods: Two virtual focus groups were held in August 2021, one for adult asthma and one for COPD, to learn of patients' experiences receiving care for these conditions in the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) region of British Columbia.

Non-inferior antibody levels for HPV16/18 after extended two-dose schedules compared with a six-month interval: findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Protection after human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination can be maximized by optimizing vaccination schedules. We systematically reviewed immunogenicity and effectiveness of HPV vaccines administered 6 months apart compared with longer intervals. Seroconversion to vaccine-type HPV was non-inferior for 12- compared with 6-month intervals, but inconclusive for comparison of 36-96 months with 6 months.

Widespread Antibiotic, Biocide, and Metal Resistance in Microbial Communities Inhabiting a Municipal Waste Environment and Anthropogenically Impacted River.

The Riverton City dump is Jamaica's largest solid waste disposal site, but it lacks engineered protection for leachate containment and treatment. Shotgun metagenomics was used to survey the microbial communities in the Riverton City dump leachate and in surface waters of the Duhaney River, an urban waterway abutting the dump. The community within the leachate pond was taxonomically distinct from that found in the surface waters of the Duhaney River.

HIV Drug Resistance Surveillance Among Jamaican Men Who Have Sex with Men Should Be Prioritized for Reducing HIV Transmission.

The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is highest among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Jamaica but no genotypic data are available on the virus strains that are responsible for the epidemic among this key population. HIV-1 polymerase (pol) genes from 65 MSM were sequenced and used to predict drug resistance mutations. An HIV drug resistance prevalence of 28% (minimum 13%) was observed among this cohort, with the most frequent mutations conferring resistance to efavirenz, nevirapine, and lamivudine.

Background: In Trinidad and the wider Caribbean, subtype B Human Immunodeficiency Virus-type 1 (HIV-1B) overwhelmingly accounts for HIV infection among heterosexuals; this contrasts with the association of HIV-1B with homosexual transmission and injecting drug use globally.
