(1) Background: The goal of this study is to evaluate psychological tolerance and health-related quality of life (QOL) in head and neck (HN) cancer patients treated with definitive accelerated radiotherapy (DART). (2) Methods: 76 recurrence-free patients eligible for the study, who were treated with DART in the CAIR-2 phase III clinical study (median of follow-up = 47 months), completed EORTC QLQ-C30 with the H&N35 module, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Visual-Analog Scales (VAS) of pain in HN and the neck/arm areas. (3) Results: The most dominant symptoms measured with QLQ-C30 were as follows: fatigue (44/100), sleeplessness (39/100), financial problems (38/100) and pain (32/100).

Circulating cell-free HPV16 DNA (cfHPV16 DNA) was evaluated as a possible complementary marker to radiological assessment of early response in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) after radiotherapy alone or combined with chemotherapy.
Methods: The study included 66 patients with HPV-related OPC receiving radical radiotherapy alone or in combination with chemotherapy.
Between January 2017 and July 2018 103 patients were included in a prospective study of erythropoietin (EPO) monitoring. The group consisted of 33% patients with oropharynx, 29% with oral cavity, 13% with nasopharynx, 6% with larynx, 6% with hypopharynx, 8% with unknown primary cancer, 4% with nasal cavity, and 1% with salivary gland cancer. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with rapidly growing mass in the right lower neck, primarily diagnosed in fineneedle aspiration cytology as a low-differentiated carcinoma. After the surgery, exclusion of all the other possible primary tumour locations, and immunohistochemistry tests, the diagnosis of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland was established.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and preliminary results of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) with low-energy photons as a boost in patients with early-stage oral cancer with the indications for postoperative radiotherapy.
Patients And Methods: Between 2003 and 2006, 16 patients with early-stage cancer of mobile tongue (n = 10 [63%]) or floor of the mouth (n = 6 [37%]) treated at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Gliwice Branch, Poland, were evaluated for IORT boost with the INTRABEAM®System (Carl Zeiss Surgical GmbH; IORT-PRS) because of the high risk of local recurrence due to positive margins on frozen pathologic section. After tumor resection, the applicator was positioned in the tumor bed.
Purpose: To evaluate severity of acute mucosal reactions (AMR) caused by conventional (CF) and accelerated fractionation (AF) regimens using a modified Dische system and to analyze differences in incidence and severity of AMR according to frequency and regularity of scoring.
Methods And Materials: Sixty-six consecutive patients (33 CF, 33 AF) with head and neck cancer irradiated with 5 fractions in 5 days per week (CF) or with 7 fractions in 7 days (AF) to a total dose of 70 Gy. A modified Dische system was used for daily quantitation of AMR during radiotherapy until complete healing.
Purpose: To update 5-year results of a previously published study on special 7-days-a-week fractionation continuous accelerated irradiation (CAIR) for head-and-neck cancer patients.
Methods And Materials: One hundred patients with squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck in Stage T(2-4)N(0-1)M(0) were randomized between two definitive radiation treatments: accelerated fractionation 7 days a week including weekends (CAIR) and conventional 5 days a week (control). Hence the overall treatment time was 2 weeks shorter in CAIR.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: In this paper we present the preliminary results of a prospective trial of the efficacy of simultaneous radiotherapy and anti-EGFR (125)I radioimmunotherapy of malignant gliomas with 2 years' total survival as the end-point, raising the question whether anti-EGFR (125)I radioimmunotherapy influences the disease-free survival in these patients.
Material And Methods: Patients with anaplastic astrocytoma or primary glioblastoma were previously treated by a macroscopically radical neurosurgical approach and randomized either to radiotherapy + radioimmunotherapy arm or treated by radiotherapy alone. Seven patients were included in the group with radioimmunotherapy, among them five with GBM and two with AA, and five patients in the control arm.
A population study is reported in which the DNA damage induced by g-radiation (2 Gy) and the kinetics of the subsequent repair were estimated by the comet and micronucleus assays in isolated lymphocytes of 82 healthy donors and patients with head and neck cancer before radiotherapy. The parameters of background and radiation-induced DNA damage, rate of repair, and residual non-repaired damage were measured by comet assay, and the repair kinetics for every donor were computer-fitted to an exponential curve. The level of background DNA damage before irradiation measured by comet assay as well as the level of micronuclei were significantly higher in the head and neck cancer patient group than in the healthy donors, while the parameters of repair were widely scattered in both groups.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHere we report a case of a 48-year-old man after heart transplantation in whom two years after the procedure an appendage germ tumour was diagnosed and a year after its removal in the same area a primary undifferentiated small cell carcinoma (Merkel cell carcinoma) with metastases to the axillary lymph nodes was detected. The diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining showing a typical perinuclear expression of cytokeratin 20 with the absence of reactivity with wide spectrum cytokeratin and the presence of neuroendocrine markers of neurone-specific enolase and chromogranin. Primary undifferentiated small cell carcinoma occurs more frequently in patients receiving immunosuppressive treatment as compared with a general population and occurs much more frequently in those below 50 years of age.
