This paper describes a simple model for comparing the degree of electronic coupling between molecules and electrodes across different large-area molecular junctions. The resulting coupling parameter can be obtained directly from current-voltage data or extracted from published data without fitting. We demonstrate the generalizability of this model by comparing over 40 different junctions comprising different molecules and measured by different laboratories.

This paper presents an efficient method to calculate the influence of structural defects on the energy levels and energy band-gap for the 4H-SiC semiconductor. The semi-empirical extended Hückel method was applied to both ideal 4H-SiC crystal and different structures with defects like vacancies, stacking faults, and threading edge dislocations. The Synopsys QuatumATK package was used to perform the simulations.

This paper describes tunneling junctions comprising self-assembled monolayers that can be converted between resistor and diode functionality in-place. The rectification ratio is affected by the hydration of densely packed carboxylic acid groups at the interface between the top-contact and the monolayer. We studied this process by treatment with water and a water scavenger using three different top-contacts, eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn), conducting-probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), demonstrating that the phenomena is molecular in nature and is not platform-speciffc.

A series of solid nanocomposites containing CdS nanoparticles in polymeric matrix with varied conditions on the interface particle/polymer was fabricated and studied by photoluminescence (PL) and optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) methods. The results revealed interface-related features in both PL and ODMR spectra. The revealed paramagnetic centers are concluded to be involved in the processes of photo-excited carriers relaxation.

Tunnelling currents through tunnelling junctions comprising molecules with cross-conjugation are markedly lower than for their linearly conjugated analogues. This effect has been shown experimentally and theoretically to arise from destructive quantum interference, which is understood to be an intrinsic, electronic property of molecules. Here we show experimental evidence of conformation-driven interference effects by examining through-space conjugation in which π-conjugated fragments are arranged face-on or edge-on in sufficiently close proximity to interact through space.

The conditions for growing CdS nanoparticles suitable for the visualization of biological tissues were theoretically studied and experimentally checked. The optimal ranges for pH values and precursors' concentrations were determined. The applicability of the mercaptoethanol-capped nanoparticles for in vitro luminescence visualization of several cellular forms in histological specimens of human placenta has been proven.

We studied the influence of embedded dipole moments in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on template stripped Au surfaces with liquid eutectic Ga-In alloy as a top electrode. We designed three molecules based on a -terphenyl structure in which the central aromatic ring is either phenyl or a dipole-inducing pyrimidyl in one of two different orientations. All three form well defined SAMs with similar thickness, packing density and tilt angle, with dipole moments embedded in the SAM, isolated from either interface.

Raman spectroscopy is employed to characterize the bonding between CdS nanoparticles (NPs) and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as well as structural changes in the polymeric matrix caused by incorporation of NPs. It is shown that after the formation of CdS NPs the vibrations of carbonyl groups in acetate residuals of PVA and of C-O groups at the macromolecules ends disappear. Formation of NPs also leads to an increased degree of hydrogen bonding and crystallinity of the hybrid material as compared with the unloaded polymer.

Improvement of polyvinyl alcohol stability against ultraviolet (UV) illumination is achieved by introducing cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles into the polymeric matrix. Enhancement of stability is analyzed by optical characterization methods. UV protection is achieved by diminishing the probability of photo-activated formation of defects in polymer.
