Background And Aims: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) remains a very little studied subject in Madagascar, despite the resulting alteration of quality of life. Our study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for sexual dysfunction in Malagasy women with and without type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study, carried out in the Endocrinology department of the Joseph Raseta Befelatanana University Hospital Center over a period of 18 months.

A multi-site cross-sectional study on the burden of SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare workers in Madagascar.

The prevalence of infections and risk factors that go along with them give insights into the burden of disease and effectiveness of infection prevention and control strategies. In this study we investigated the burden of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and associated epidemiological factors in three regions of Madagascar among healthcare workers. Between May and June 2021, we conducted a multi-site cross-sectional study among healthcare workers in eight University Hospital Centers, during the local second wave and before the coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination campaign in three regional capitals of Madagascar.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is already a major cardiovascular risk factor (CRF). Hypovitaminosis D is common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It also increases the cardiovascular risk of these subjects.

Dog ecology and rabies control including canine vaccination coverage: Impacts from a survey in Madagascar.

Background: Rabies virus (RABV; species Lyssavirus rabies) is causing one of the oldest zoonotic diseases known to mankind, leading to fatal encephalomyelitis in animals and humans. Despite the existence of safe and effective vaccines to prevent the disease, an estimated 99% of human rabies deaths worldwide are caused by dog-mediated rabies with children at the highest risk of infection. Rabies has been endemic in Madagascar for over a century, yet there has been little research evaluating local knowledge and practices impacting on the rabies control and prevention.

A retrospective cohort analysis of people living with HIV/AIDS enrolled in HIV care at a reference center in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Prevalence and factors associated with carotid atherosclerosis in a Malagasy population with Type 2 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional retrospective study.

Aim: Our study aims to determine the prevalence and factors associated with carotid atherosclerosis in Malagasy Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study, carried out over a period of 30 months. The diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis is established by the presence of a carotid plaque increased carotid intima-media thickness ≥1.

Urinary tract infection in diabetics hospitalized in Befelatanana Hospital, Antananarivo: Epidemiological, clinical, biological profiles and risk factors for multidrug-resistant bacterial infection.

Key Clinical Message: The main type of urinary tract infection in hospitalized diabetics in Antananarivo is acute pyelonephritis; is the most isolated uropathogen; imipenem, amikacin, fosfomycin and ceftriaxone are the major antibiotics for which retain good sensitivity; Type 2 diabetes is predictive factor for infection by multidrug resistant bacteria.

Abstract: This study aimed to describe the epidemiological-clinical profiles of diabetics hospitalized for bacterial urinary tract infections in the Endocrinology Department of Befelatanana Hospital, to identify the main bacteria responsible, their antibiotic sensitivity profile and the factors associated with multidrug-resistant bacterial infection. A cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2017 and March 2020 involving all diabetics hospitalized for documented community-acquired bacterial urinary tract infection during this period.

Pulmonary tuberculosis is frequently associated with diabetes mellitus and, sometimes, it may present with atypical signs. The purpose of this study is to identify the epidemiological, clinical, biological and radiological features of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with diabetes versus patients without diabetes in order to improve treatment. We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study in the Department of Endocrinology and Pneumology at the Joseph Raseta Befelatanana University Hospital Center and in the Department of Respiratory Diseases at the Soavinandriana Hospital Center in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Introduction: Chest pain is one of the different elements of orientation for the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. Sometimes its clinical presentation is misleading. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of chest pain during an acute coronary syndrome in the cardiology department of the Joseph Raseta Befelatanana University Hospital Center, Antananarivo, Madagascar.

[Severity Factors of Pulmonary Aspergilloma in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit of Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital, Antananarivo, Madagascar].

Objective: This retrospective study was designed to study the clinical profile, post-operative outcome with analysis of severity factors of pulmonary aspergilloma operated in our institute.

Patients And Methodology: During a 5-year period (June 2009 to June 2014), 34 patients underwent surgery for pulmonary aspergilloma and were admitted in the surgical intensive care unit of the CHU/JRA Antananarivo.

Results: The group consist of 23 male patients and 11 female patients with a mean age of 42 ± 9.

Clinical and epidemiological features discriminating confirmed COVID-19 patients from SARS-CoV-2 negative patients at screening centres in Madagascar.

Early and fast detection of COVID-19 patients help limit the transmission and wide spread of the virus in the community and will have impact on mortality by reducing the incidence of infection among vulnerable people. Therefore, community-based screening is critical. We aimed to identify clinical signs and symptoms and epidemiological features that could help discriminate confirmed cases of COVID-19 from SARS-CoV-2 negative patients.

Nutritional status of female prisoners in Antanimora prison, Madagascar.

Introduction: The prison population in low-income countries is a group vulnerable to undernutrition, particularly incarcerated women. The aim of the study is to assess the nutritional status of women in prison and to determine the social profile and prison conditions related to undernutrition.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 125 women prisoners in Antanimora prison located in the city of Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Association between dietary fibre intake and asthma (symptoms and control): results from the French national e-cohort NutriNet-Santé.

Despite growing evidence suggesting a potential health benefit of high fibre intake for the prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases, studies regarding the role of total dietary fibre intake, types and sources of fibre on asthma are lacking. The present study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional association of dietary fibre intakes and source of fibre with the asthma symptom score and asthma control. A total of 35 380 participants from the NutriNet-Santé cohort were included.

Association between processed meat intake and asthma symptoms in the French NutriNet-Santé cohort.

Purpose: Processed meat intake may adversely affect lung health, but data on asthma remains sparse. The magnitude of the processed meat-asthma association may also depend on other unhealthy behaviors. We investigated the association between processed meat intake and the asthma symptom score, and the combined role of unhealthy weight, smoking, low diet quality, and high processed meat intake on the asthma score.

Benefits of kidney transplantation for a national cohort of patients aged 70 years and older starting renal replacement therapy.

Our objectives were to evaluate kidney transplantation survival benefit in people aged ≥70 who were receiving renal replacement therapy (RRT) and to identify their risk factors for posttransplant mortality. This study included all patients in the national French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network registry who started RRT between 2002 and 2013 at age ≥70. Mortality risk was compared between patients with transplants; on the waiting list; and on dialysis matched for age, gender, comorbidities, and time on dialysis.

Hospitalization of HIV positive patients in a referral tertiary care hospital in Antananarivo Madagascar, 2010-2016: Trends, causes and outcome.

Background: During the last few years, significant efforts have been made to improve access to antiretroviral therapy which led to dramatic reduction in AIDS-related events and mortality in HIV positive patients at the global level. However, current data in Africa suggested modest impact of widespread antiretroviral therapy scale-up especially regarding HIV-related hospitalization. In this study, we aimed to describe causes of hospitalization and factors associated with AIDS-defining events and inpatient mortality.

Associations between dietary scores with asthma symptoms and asthma control in adults.

Associations between asthma and the nutritional quality of diet remain poorly understood. We investigated the associations between overall quality of diet evaluated by three dietary scores (the Alternate Healthy Eating Index 2010 (AHEI-2010), the literature-based adherence score to Mediterranean diet (MEDI-LITE) and the modified Programme National Nutrition Santé Guideline Score (mPNNS-GS)) and the asthma symptom score and asthma control.In 2017, 34 766 participants from the NutriNet-Santé cohort answered a detailed respiratory questionnaire.

Evaluation of the Xpert MTB/RIF assay for the diagnosis of smear-negative pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Madagascar.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of the implementation of a commercial rapid molecular diagnostic test (Xpert MTB/RIF) for the routine diagnosis of smear-negative or extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and its diagnostic accuracy, and to assess HIV prevalence in a real-life setting in Madagascar. This study was set in a tertiary care hospital in Madagascar.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted of all consecutive cases with suspected smear-negative and/or extrapulmonary TB over a 2-year period.

Clinical Features and Outcome in Adult Cases of Tuberculous Meningitis in Tertiary Care Hospital in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

We aimed to describe and to assess prognosis factors in tuberculous meningitis in adult patients. We performed a retrospective study of case records of adult patients. Patients classified as definite, probable, or possible tuberculous meningitis according to standardized definition criteria were included and assessed in the study.
