A hamster-associated epizootic of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus infection in medical center personnel at the University of Rochester in 1973 necessitated prompt termination of the Syrain hamster colony. Necropsies were performed on 130 hamsters, blood speciments were obtained from 60 for serotest, and viral isolation procedures were done on 47. Active virus infection, as shown by virus isolation, was associated with the presence of lymphoreticular infiltrate in liver and kidney.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA series of cases is reported in which pink teeth were observed during the postmortem period. Most cases were associated with decomposition in a moist environment. Experimental procedures led to the extraction of pink material from dentin and demonstration that hemoglobin and serum proteins were present.

Four patients were treated with intravenous atropine and responded successfully. The vagus reaction is proposed as a possible mechanism of death in the "allergic" reaction to contrast media seen during radiological procedures.

Virus-like particles were found in spontaneously arising mammary adenocarcinomas from 2 male guinea pigs. The type-B particles were 100 nm in diameter and budded from the apex of stalks into cisternae. Examination of normal and neoplastic tissues from other guinea pigs failed to reveal similar particles.

It is concluded that mammary adenocarcinomas are second only to pulmonary adenomas as the most common epithelial tumors in the guinea pig. The sex incidence of mammary tumors is almost equal and both young and old animals are susceptible.

Utilizing a variety of techniques, the activities of alkaline phosphatase, nonspecific esterases, leucine aminopeptidase, beta-glucuronidase, and methyl green pyroninophilia were determined. The activities of enzymes normally associated with tissue proliferation and active protein synthesis were decreased, whereas those enzymes associated by cytolysis were increased.

Subjects represented business college students enrolled in typing (N=49) and English (N = 39) classes, applicants for clerical positions (N=50), and college students (N=11). State-trait anxiety inventory A-trait scores (Study I only) and scores on a 10-item questionnaire designed to assess both the cognitive (worry) and emotional components of state anxiety were correlated with performance measures reflecting both typing speed and accuracy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA case of multiple animal bite wounds is presented along with the techniques used to apprehend the culprits. The victim was a 13 month-old black female who had in excess of 80 puncture wounds. Initially the wounds were thought to be caused by a mechanical instrument but, after an autopsy, were determined to be caused by a large animal.

Elastin breakdown began at an early age and progressed rapidly. Changes observed included replacement of elastica by fibroblasts and ground substance.

The feline neoplasm had morphological characteristics closely resembling those of dysgerminomas in women. The feline and one canine neoplasm occurred in young animals as compared to other reported animal dysgerminomas.
