Targeted blood pressure (BP) control is a goal of left ventricular assist device medical management, but the interpretation of values obtained from noninvasive instruments is challenging. In the MOMENTUM 3 Continued Access Protocol, paired BP values in HeartMate 3 (HM3) patients were compared from arterial (A)-line and Doppler opening pressure (DOP) (319 readings in 261 patients) and A-line and automated cuff (281 readings in 247 patients). Pearson (R) correlations between A-line mean arterial (MAP) and systolic blood pressures (SBP) were compared with DOP and cuff measures according to the presence (>1 pulse in 5 seconds) or absence of a palpable radial pulse.

Ovarian cancer cells evade the immune system as well as chemotherapeutic and/or biologic treatments through inherent or acquired mechanisms of survival and drug resistance. Depending on the cell type and the stimuli, this threshold can range from external forces such as blunt trauma to programmed processes such as apoptosis, autophagy, or necroptosis. This review focuses on apoptosis, which is one form of programmed cell death.

Ovarian cancer (OvCa) is the most lethal gynecological malignancy in the United States primarily due to lack of a reliable early diagnostic, high incidence of chemo-resistant recurrent disease as well as profuse tumor heterogeneity. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) continue to gain attention, as they are known to resist chemotherapy, self-renew and re-populate the bulk tumor with undifferentiated and differentiated cells. Moreover, CSCs appear to readily adapt to environmental, immunologic and pharmacologic cues.

HER2-positive breast cancer is driven by cells possessing stem-like properties of self-renewal and differentiation, referred to as cancer stem cells (CSC). CSCs are implicated in radiotherapy, chemotherapy resistance, and tumor recurrence. NOTCH promotes breast CSC survival and self-renewal, and overexpression of NOTCH1 and the NOTCH ligand JAGGED1 predict poor outcome.

The Notch pathway is a well-established mediator of cell-cell communication that plays a critical role in stem cell survival, self-renewal, cell fate decisions, tumorigenesis, invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance in a variety of cancers. An interesting form of crosstalk exists between the Notch receptor and the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Tyrosine Kinase family, which consists of HER-1, -2, -3, and -4. Overexpression of HER and/or Notch occurs in several human cancers including brain, lung, breast, ovary, and skin making them potent oncogenes capable of advancing malignant disease.

Because tactile perception relies on the response of large populations of receptors distributed across the skin, we seek to characterize how a mechanical deformation of the skin at one location affects the skin at another. To this end, we introduce a novel non-contact method to characterize the surface waves produced in the skin under a variety of stimulation conditions. Specifically, we deliver vibrations to the fingertip using a vibratory actuator and measure, using a laser Doppler vibrometer, the surface waves at different distances from the locus of stimulation.
