The Liver X Receptor (LXR) alpha and beta isoforms are members of the type II nuclear receptor family which function as obligate heterodimers with the Retinoid X Receptor (RXR). Upon agonist binding, the DNA Binding Domain (DBD) of LXR interacts with LXR response elements on target genes to initiate transcription. A number of genes have been shown to be modulated by LXR function, including the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1).

Biaryl synthesis via palladium-catalyzed aryne multicomponent coupling.

Aryl iodides have been introduced as electrophiles in the three-component Heck coupling of arynes. Following optimization studies to favor three- versus two-component coupling, the reaction proceeds in good yield to afford a variety of functionalized biaryls.

The synthesis of a functionalized spiropiperidine via a tandem ring closing metathesis strategy is described, furthermore, the regio- and stereoselective functionalization of this compound has been achieved through a novel nitrogen-directed epoxidation reaction.
