Traumatic pediatric hip dislocations are uncommon and can occur following minor trauma. This injury may be overlooked, as pediatric hip dislocations can reduce spontaneously prior to medical attention. In this scenario, the presenting hip radiographs may provide evidence of a prior transient hip dislocation episode by demonstrating signs of a nonconcentric hip reduction, and prompt further evaluation with advanced imaging.

Gas embolization is a rare but potentially deadly complication of any laparoscopic surgery. There has only been one other report of gas emboli in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. We present a case of gas embolization in a young female patient undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

This article presents a summary of information found within the existing medical literature on the pharmacological treatment options for maternal depression during lactation and the concurrent effects on the breastfeeding infant. Existing data on safety and efficacy varies by treatment modality. Medications used to treat depression are all secreted in breast milk to some extent; however, most antidepressants are considered relatively safe to use during breastfeeding.

Glomus tumors are rare vascular hamartomas most commonly found in the subungual region of the fingers. They present with a classic triad of paroxysmal pain, point tenderness, and cold sensitivity. The diagnosis is often missed for several years due to under recognition of this condition.

Fatal Accidental Drowning in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, 1880-1939.

Drowning is currently the second leading cause of injury-related death for children 1-4 years of age in the United States and is the leading cause of death worldwide for boys ages 5-14 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies it as a public health threat and advocates for reducing drowning deaths by understanding geographical, cultural, and societal risk factors. To these three we added a fourth: historical studies.

Myocarditis in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, 1880-1939.

From 1920 to 1940 in Minnehaha County there was an apparent striking increase in the incidence of fatal myocarditis and chronic myocarditis. Based on an analysis of the interment records of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, word frequency studies in two prominent American medical journals and a general review of related medical publications, we explore this increase.

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in Infants - A Review for Providers.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), historically known as congenital hip dysplasia, is a multifactorial disease that affects numerous infants and children every year. DDH encompasses a wide spectrum of joint pathology and therefore screening recommendations, including serial physical examination and appropriate imaging if needed, are utilized to diminish the risk of abnormal hip development which may later impact mobility. Risk factors are poor predictors of DDH, but may increase its likelihood, and include female gender, breech positioning in the third trimester, multiple gestation and family history.
