Purpose: The use of 'hinged' knee prostheses for primary knee arthroplasty procedures is increasing. This analysis reports the rates of implant survival, modes of failure, revision details and functional outcomes with particular reference to the primary indication for surgery for a cohort of patients treated with primary hinged knee replacement.

Methods: Systematic review with supplementary analysis using data from the National Joint Registry and Department of Health.

Background: This biomechanical study examined difference in cement pressures generated by flanged and unflanged acetabular cups in hip arthroplasty.

Method: Using a model acetabulum, cement was inserted and pressurised followed by cup insertion and pressurisation. Pressures were recorded using transducers in the acetabulum.

Variable union rates in ankle arthrodesis using different surgical techniques have been reported in the biomedical literature. However, the advantages of a transfibular approach with sagittal splitting of the fibula have not been widely reported, even though the technique is well known and even described in surgical textbooks. We analyzed outcomes in our practice for all patients who underwent ankle arthrodesis.

Background: Tibial pilon injuries are a complex group of fractures, whose classification and radiological assessment has been under constant reform. Till date, there is no universally accepted classification system.

Objective: To determine the interobserver agreement and intraobserver reproducibility of Ruedi and Allgower, AO, and Topliss et al.

Background: The 'Tritanium' (Stryker, New Jersey, USA) highly porous acetabular cup is a new implant used in revision hip arthroplasty.

Aim: To determine the early results of this device.

Methods: A prospective study of 43 acetabular component revisions performed using the implant between March 2007 and February 2008 was undertaken.

Introduction: Revision acetabulum arthroplasty is one of the common procedures, which has been on the rise recently. Many implants are available in the market with variable results. Aseptic loosening is the most common indication for revision acetabulum arthroplasty.

Introduction: Knee pain is a complex problem that can occur after total knee arthroplasty. One cause of knee pain may be due to a retained osteophyte, but it is not clear if the retained osteophyte is sufficient explanation of the pain, as not all patients with retained osteophytes are symptomatic. In fact, the literature shows that excised osteophytes can also recur over a period of time, without any symptoms.

There has been a recent trend towards using a raft of small diameter 3.5mm cortical screws for supporting depressed tibial plateau fractures (Schatzker type III). Our aim was to compare the biomechanical properties of a raft of 3.
