Testing the Bivalent Fear of Evaluation Model of Social Anxiety: The Relationship between Fear of Positive Evaluation, Social Anxiety, and Perfectionism.

The Bivalent Fear of Evaluation (BFOE) model of social anxiety proposes that fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE) play distinct roles in social anxiety. Research is however lacking in terms of how FPE is related to perfectionism and how these constructs interact to predict social anxiety. Participants were 382 individuals from the general community and included an oversampling of individuals with social anxiety.

Neurophysiological correlates of configural face processing in schizotypy.

Background: Face processing impairment in schizophrenia appears to be underpinned by poor configural (as opposed to feature-based) processing; however, few studies have sought to characterize this impairment electrophysiologically. Given the sensitivity of event-related potentials to antipsychotic medications, and the potential for neurophysiological abnormalities to serve as vulnerability markers for schizophrenia, a handful of studies have investigated early visual P100 and face-selective N170 in "at risk" populations. However, this is the first known neurophysiological investigation of configural face processing in a non-clinical schizotypal sample.

Self-efficacy, pain-related fear, and disability in a heterogeneous pain sample.

The fear avoidance model of chronic pain is well established for specific chronic pain groups and of considerable clinical utility, but it suffers from poor generalizability. Therefore, in this study we examined the role of self-efficacy (SE) in the relationship between pain-related fear (PRF) and three pain-related outcomes-pain severity, disability, and depression-in a more heterogeneous chronic pain sample. Insecure attachment and disordered eating in women: the mediating processes of social comparison and emotion dysregulation.

Few studies have examined potential intermediary processes linking insecure attachment with eating disorders. The purpose of this study was to compare the relative contributions of social comparison and emotion dysregulation on disordered eating symptoms within an attachment framework. Participants were 247 women living in Australia, aged between 18 and 35 years.

Caring for the country: fatigue, sleep and mental health in Australian rural paramedic shiftworkers.

This study investigated sleep quality, fatigue, mental health and physical activity in rural paramedic shiftworkers. Although limited, previous studies have associated high fatigue levels and poorer health in this sector with shiftwork rostering and occupational demands. A modified version of the Standard Shiftwork Index was completed by 150 paramedics (117 male and 31 females) from rural Victoria.

Reward sensitivity and outcome expectancies as predictors of ecstasy use in young adults.

Extending recent studies showing that sensitivity to reward and outcome expectancies are associated with problematic alcohol and cannabis use, we undertook to determine if similar relationships would hold for ecstasy. One hundred and twenty five males and females aged between 18 and 35years were recruited from RMIT University and through snowball sampling. Participants completed a questionnaire package measuring frequency, amount and first age of ecstasy use, sensitivity to reward and punishment as well as outcome expectancies relating to ecstasy use.

Early maladaptive schemas and personality disorder symptoms: An examination in a non-clinical sample.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the overall and specific relationship between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and personality disorder (PD) symptoms in a non-clinical sample.

Design: While a notable previous study has examined the relationship between EMSs and PD symptoms after statistically controlling for gender and within-cluster PD symptoms, they did not control for comorbid axis I and inter-cluster PD symptoms. Hence, we redressed this methodological problem by statistically controlling for these conditions in a series of multiple regressions.

Locus of control beliefs mediate the relationship between religious functioning and psychological health.

Relaxation and imagery for chronic, nonmalignant pain: effects on pain symptoms, quality of life, and mental health.

Nonpharmacologic treatments are being increasingly adopted as alternative or primary approaches to chronic pain management. We present results of a pilot study examining the effect of a 6-week combined abbreviated progressive relaxation technique (APRT) and guided imagery (GI) intervention for the management of chronic pain (N=19) and, using power analysis, explore recommended sample sizes for future clinical trials. Results indicated consistent and clinically significant trends of improvement on pain (McGill Pain Questionnaire, visual analog scale), mental health (Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale), all domains of quality of life (RAND-36 Health Survey), and sleep for the treatment group only.
