A 37 year old male presented with the complaint of a loose and bulky acrylic obturator prosthesis. He had previously tried to using a different acrylic obturator prostheses as well as both cobalt chromium and titanium framework obturators. The most successful previous prosthesis was a titanium based obturator which had performed well prior to a fractured clasp.

A patient presented with impending airway obstruction due to a dislodged interim maxillary obturator. The removal was complicated by the presence of severe trismus due to previous maxillectomy and recent radiotherapy. An emergency tracheotomy with the patient under local anesthetic was required to provide a definitive airway and to permit subsequent removal of the obturator with the patient under general anesthesia.

This UK national survey set out to find the most commonly used gastrostomy insertion technique and to estimate the number of cases of gastrostomy site tumour seeding experienced over the last 3 years. Questionnaires were sent to one maxillofacial consultant of 154 UK hospitals, details of whom were obtained using the directory of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Questionnaires were returned from 65% (100/154) of hospitals.

The following case reports describe the clinical features, diagnosis and management of two patients who presented to their general dental practitioner with a complaint of orofacial paraesthesia. After appropriate investigations, both patients were diagnosed as having benign intracranial tumours and were managed by a neurosurgeon. These cases illustrate the important role the general dental practitioner has in the early recognition of potentially life-threatening conditions.
