Continued challenges in pediatric anesthesia during COVID-19 in 2022: An international survey from the pediatric anesthesia COVID-19 collaborative.

Introduction: This international survey explored the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on pediatric anesthesiology. It assessed COVID-19's impact on the practice of pediatric anesthesiology, staffing, job satisfaction, and retention at the beginning of 2022 and addressed what should be done to ameliorate COVID-19's impact and what initiatives hospitals had implemented.

Methods: This survey focused on five major domains: equipment/medication, vaccination/testing, staffing, burnout, and economic repercussions.

Staying Virtual: A Survey Study of the Virtual Lecture Experience in Academic Medicine.

Background: Increasing clinical demands can adversely impact academic advancement, including the ability to deliver lectures and disseminate scholarly work. The virtual lecture platform became mainstream during the height of the coronavirus-19 pandemic. Lessons learned from this period may offer insight into supporting academic productivity among physicians who must balance multiple demands, including high clinical workloads and family care responsibilities.

Musculoskeletal Applications of Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound.

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a novel noninvasive therapy that uses focused sound energy to thermally ablate focal pathology within the body. In the United States, MRgFUS is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of uterine fibroids, palliation of painful bone metastases, and thalamotomy for the treatment of essential tremor. However, it has also demonstrated utility for the treatment of a wide range of additional musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions that currently are treated as off-label indications.

Implementation and Assessment of a Visiting Scholar Exchange Program in Pediatric Anesthesiology to Promote Junior Faculty and Fellow Professional Development.

Background: Junior faculty in academic medicine often struggle with establishing their careers, resulting in low promotion and high attrition rates. Fellows also grapple with the decision to pursue careers in academic medicine. We report on the implementation and evaluation of a novel faculty and fellows exchange program that promotes career development.

Anesthesiology Residency Training and the Anesthesia Toolbox: Five Years of Experience With a Collaboratively Developed Peer-Reviewed e-Learning System.

The Internet is a source of professional self-education for medical students and residents. Unfortunately, much of the content discovered through search engines is of insufficient quality for professional education. The Anesthesia Toolbox (AT) was developed to provide online peer-reviewed educational resources for anesthesiology trainees and faculty.

East/West Visiting Scholars in Pediatric Anesthesia Program (ViSiPAP): Developing tomorrow's pediatric anesthesia leaders.

Promoting and retaining junior faculty are major challenges for many medical schools. High clinical workloads often limit time for scholarly projects and academic development, especially in anesthesiology. To address this, we created the East/West Visiting Scholars in Pediatric Anesthesia Program (ViSiPAP).

Applying Conflict Management Strategies to the Pediatric Operating Room.

Effective communication is essential in today's health care environment, and poor communication can lead to conflict among health care providers. Differences in cultures and beliefs can further incite conflict among health care team members, families, and patients. Pediatric patient care has a higher potential for conflict because decision-making responsibilities are shared among patients, parents/guardians, and clinicians.

Pediatric upper airway and congenital anomalies.

Understanding the differences between the infant upper airway and the adult upper airway is important in properly managing the infant and pediatric airway. Proper history and physical examination and selection of the appropriate endotracheal tubes, LMAs, and laryngoscopes are key to managing the normal infant and pediatric airway. The difficult infant and pediatric airway requires planning, preparation, and teamwork.
