Urbanization and elevated selenium can negatively affect aquatic macroinvertebrate communities. These factors are often highly correlated in streams along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, USA. Understanding which factor is the primary driver of macroinvertebrate community health would aid in the development of appropriate management actions to mitigate their influence.

The accuracy of these measures depends on the skill and experience of the person identifying the macroinvertebrates, and obtaining these measures can be relatively expensive due to the time necessary for identification. Utilizing genetic identification of macroinvertebrate taxa has the potential to reduce the time of sample processing, identify a greater number of taxa, and increase the resolution of identification.

Over the same time period, concentrations of dissolved copper in the Big Thompson River (BTR), Colorado, USA, increased significantly and are high enough to negatively affect aquatic life. We examined correlations between dissolved copper and tree mortality in the BTR.
