Acute pavement burns: a unique subset of burn injuries: a five-year review of resource use and cost impact.

This study focuses on the hospital care of a rare subset of burn injuries caused by contact with environmentally heated pavement, to further understand the required use of resources. This article aims to show that pavement burns are typically more severe than their flame/scald counterparts. A retrospective review of patients admitted to the burn center with injuries suffered from contact with hot pavement was performed.

Utilization of a continuous external tissue expansion system to assist in primary closure of a large anterolateral thigh donor site defect.

Primary closure of a large anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap donor site defect with the assistance of an external tissue expansion system is presented. The dimensions of this donor site (12 cm × 40 cm) and its percentage of leg circumference (34%) would make this site likely to require skin grafting or further flap coverage based on the results of previously published literature.

Acral myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma: A case report and literature review.

Acral myxoinflammatory fibroplastic sarcoma is an extremely rare soft-tissue sarcoma. It typically presents as an inflammatory mass in the distal extremities of adult patients. The authors present a review of the available literature as well as a discussion on the surgical management of a patient with acral myxoinflammatory fibroplastic sarcoma who originally requested conservative management but ultimately required a two-digit ray amputation after local recurrence.

A practical correction of great toe claw deformity.

Ischemic contracture of the leg causing clawing of the toes is a known complication of compartment syndrome of the leg. Although a substantial amount of published data are available on the prevention and acute management of compartment syndrome, a relative paucity of data has been published on the optimal management of the resultant claw toe deformity. In the present case report, the operative management of a patient with left great toe clawing secondary to ischemia is described.

Comparison between rigid and flexible systems for drilling the femoral tunnel through an anteromedial portal in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in femoral tunnel length and distance to the lateral anatomic structures when using standard and flexible guide pins for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) femoral tunnel drilling through a medial portal.

Methods: Using a medial arthroscopic portal in 10 cadaveric knees, we sequentially drilled straight and flexible guide pins into the center of the ACL femoral footprint using the same starting point. We recorded the interosseous length and distances to the peroneal nerve and the femoral origin of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) for each pin.

Using quality improvement to address pain management practices in nursing homes.

The objective of this study was to test whether a quality improvement intervention can improve pain management in nursing homes. Experts in quality improvement and clinical pain management provided nursing home staff leaders with feedback on pain quality indicator data, education in pain management, and technical assistance to apply the Plan-Do-Study-Act model of quality improvement. Trained abstractors completed structured chart audits at baseline and five months to capture quality indicator data related to pain assessment and treatment.
