Interactions between leucocytes and their surroundings are mediated through oligosaccharide epitopes, some of which are also expressed on ocular mucins. Neutrophils represent the majority of immune cells in the proinflammatory environment of the ocular surface during sleep. We have tested whether changes in mucin glycosylation, as occur in dry eyes, influence the phenotype and activation of neutrophils.
