With the advent of powerful convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recent studies have extended early applications of neural networks to imaging tasks thus making CNNs a potential new tool for assessing medical image quality. Here, we compare a CNN to model observers in a search task for two possible signals (a simulated mass and a smaller simulated micro-calcification) embedded in filtered noise and single slices of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) virtual phantoms. For the case of the filtered noise, we show how a CNN can approximate the ideal observer for a search task, achieving a statistical efficiency of 0.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA tracking and reporting system was developed to monitor radiation dose in X-ray breast imaging. We used our tracking system to characterize and compare the mammographic practices of five breast imaging centers located in the United States and Brazil. Clinical data were acquired using eight mammography systems comprising three modalities: computed radiography (CR), full-field digital mammography (FFDM), and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT).

Three dimensional image modalities introduce a new paradigm for visual search requiring visual exploration of a larger search space than 2D imaging modalities. The large number of slices in the 3D volumes and the limited reading times make it difficult for radiologists to explore thoroughly by fixating with their high resolution fovea on all regions of each slice. Thus, for 3D images, observers must rely much more on their visual periphery (points away from fixation) to process image information.

Materials and Methods This was an institutional review board-approved and HIPAA-compliant retrospective interpretation of prospectively acquired data with waiver of informed consent. Compared were recall rates, biopsy rates, cancer detection rates, and radiation dose for 15 571 women screened with digital mammography/DBT from October 1, 2011, to February 28, 2013, and 5366 women screened with s2D/DBT from January 7, 2015, to June 30, 2015.

Contrast-enhanced dual-energy mammography (DEM) is a novel technique that has improved sensitivity for cancer detection.

Previous theoretical and phantom studies demonstrated that silver provides greater contrast than iodine for this technique. Our objective was to characterize and evaluate in vivo a prototype silver contrast agent ultimately intended for DE mammography.

Phantom images (FOR PROCESSING) are acquired from three FFDM systems using their automated exposure control setting. A panel of texture features, including gray-level histogram, co-occurrence, run length, and structural descriptors, are extracted.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA modification to our previous simulation of breast anatomy is proposed to improve the quality of simulated x-ray projections images. The image quality is affected by the voxel size of the simulation. Large voxels can cause notable spatial quantization artifacts; small voxels extend the generation time and increase the memory requirements.

This is especially true of screening modalities. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has recently been introduced into the clinic and is being used for screening for breast cancer in the general population.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe limitations of mammography are well known and are partly related to the fact that with conventional imaging, the three-dimensional volume of the breast is imaged and presented in a two-dimensional format. Because normal breast tissue is similar in x-ray attenuation to some breast cancers, clinically relevant malignancies may be obscured by normal overlapping tissue. In addition, complex areas of normal tissue may be perceived as suspicious.

Because many breast-imaging technologies derive contrast from the deformed breast, these load-dependent vascular responses affect contrast agent-enhanced and hemoglobin-based breast imaging.
Methods: Diffuse optical and diffuse correlation spectroscopies were used to measure the concentrations of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin, lipid, water, and microvascular blood flow during axial breast compression in the parallel-plate transmission geometry.
Purpose: In tomosynthesis, super-resolution has been demonstrated using reconstruction planes parallel to the detector. Super-resolution allows for subpixel resolution relative to the detector. The purpose of this work is to develop an analytical model that generalizes super-resolution to oblique reconstruction planes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: By convention, slices in a tomosynthesis reconstruction are created on planes parallel to the detector. It has not yet been demonstrated that slices can be generated along oblique directions through the same volume, analogous to multiplanar reconstructions in computed tomography (CT). The purpose of this work is to give a proof-of-principle justification for oblique reconstructions in tomosynthesis, which acquires projection images over a smaller angular range than CT.

Purpose: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is a 3D x-ray imaging modality in which tomographic sections of the breast are generated from a limited range of tube angles. Because oblique x-ray incidence shifts the image of an object in subpixel detector element increments with each increasing projection angle, it is demonstrated that DBT is capable of super-resolution (i.e.

Purpose: To correlate the parenchymal texture features at digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and digital mammography with breast percent density (PD), an established breast cancer risk factor, in a screening population of women.
Materials And Methods: This HIPAA-compliant study was approved by the institutional review board. Bilateral DBT images and digital mammograms from 71 women (mean age, 54 years; age range, 34-75 years) with negative or benign findings at screening mammography were retrospectively collected from a separate institutional review board-approved DBT screening trial (performed from July 2007 to March 2008) in which all women had given written informed consent.

Purpose: One of the benefits of photon counting (PC) detectors over energy integrating (EI) detectors is the absence of many additive noise sources, such as electronic noise and secondary quantum noise. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that thresholding voltage gains to detect individual x rays actually generates an unexpected source of white noise in photon counters.
Methods: To distinguish the two detector types, their point spread function (PSF) is interpreted differently.
Purpose: Previously, the authors developed a dual-energy (DE) acquisition technique for a photon-counting digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) imaging system. Low-energy (LE) and high-energy (HE) images are acquired in a single scan by covering alternate slits of a multislit prepatient collimator with Sn and Cu, respectively. A theoretical model was used to optimize the technique.
