Growing evidence suggests that patients with essential tremor (ET) show impairment in psychosocial functions and subsequently increasing vulnerability to anxiety. Here we review evidence supporting a positive relationship between self-reported motor disability and psychological symptoms in ET and critically analyze evidence suggesting how psychosocial factors enhance tremor disability in ET. Theories related to motor competency, behavioral conditioning, and social anxiety have been proposed to relate self-concepts to self-reported tremor disability.

Measures of orthographic learning and word reading were included in the analyses to determine how these patterned with the learning processes. This system, which incorporates real-time optical monitoring of the vibration stimulus, can generate well-controlled and reproducible whisker deflections with amplitudes up to 2mm and frequencies up to 75 Hz, suitable for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of animals. Whiskers on either or both sides of the head can be stimulated selectively during fMRI experiments without removing the subject from the magnet.

Thus, it has been difficult to determine whether the enhancement of hippocampal sensory-evoked potentials that often accompany memory formation are the neurophysiological manifestation of a memory "trace" or are a secondary product of the behavioral expression of the memory. We addressed this issue by examining changes in evoked hippocampal field potentials during sensory preconditioning, a form of behaviorally silent relational learning that requires an intact hippocampus for execution.
