A single-pass, compact, and low-power-consumption methane sensing system is presented, and its sensitivity is examined for a set of reference cells with pressures of 7.4, 74, and 740 Torr and the same methane concentration at laboratory temperature of 23°C. A GaSb-based continuous-wave distributed feedback tunable diode laser at 3270 nm and wavelength modulation spectroscopy were employed to collect 2f spectra in the ν, R band of CH12.

In this detector having separate UV- and IR-active regions with three contacts (one common contact for both regions) allows the separation of the UV and IR generated photocurrent components, identifying the relative strength of each component. This will be an important development in UV-IR dual-band applications such as fire-flame detection, solar astronomy, and military sensing, eliminating the difficulties of employing several individual detectors with separate electronics-cooling mechanisms.
