Evidence of an active role of dreaming in emotional memory processing shows that we dream to forget.

Dreaming is a universal human behavior that has inspired searches for meaning across many disciplines including art, psychology, religion, and politics, yet its function remains poorly understood. Given the suggested role of sleep in emotional memory processing, we investigated whether reported overnight dreaming and dream content are associated with sleep-dependent changes in emotional memory and reactivity, and whether dreaming plays an active or passive role. Participants completed an emotional picture task before and after a full night of sleep and they recorded the presence and content of their dreams upon waking in the morning.

Good sleep is a mood buffer for young women during menses.

Study Objectives: We sought to elucidate the interaction between sleep and mood considering menstrual cycle phase (menses and non-menses portions of the cycle) in 72 healthy young women (18-33 years) with natural, regular menstrual cycles and without menstrual-associated disorders. This work fills a gap in literature of examining mood in context of sleep and menstrual cycle jointly, rather than individually.

Methods: Daily subjective measures of sleep and mood, and date of menses were remotely, digitally collected over a 2-month period.

Caustic Ingestion: A Risk-Based Algorithm.

Introduction: Caustic ingestion management could be improved with a diagnostic approach based on risk factors. This study aimed to develop an algorithm derived from predictive factors of a poor clinical course, to evaluate its diagnostic accuracy and resource consumption, and to compare it with 2 other approaches, a radiological one based on computed tomography and a classical one based on symptoms and endoscopy.

Methods: All patients older than 15 years presenting with caustic ingestion in our tertiary care hospital between 1995 and 2021 were prospectively included.

The 20S proteasome (20S) facilitates turnover of most eukaryotic proteins. Substrate entry into the 20S first requires opening of gating loops through binding of HbYX motifs that are present at the C-termini of certain proteasome activators (PAs). The HbYX motif has been predominantly characterized in the archaeal 20S, whereas little is known about the sequence preferences of the human 20S (h20S).

Sigmoid volvulus: outcomes of treatment and predictors of morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: To analyze the treatment outcomes for sigmoid volvulus (SV) and identify risk factors of complications and mortality.

Methods: Observational study of all consecutive adult patients diagnosed with SV who were admitted from January 2000 to December 2020 in a tertiary university institution for conservative management, urgent or elective surgery. Primary outcomes were 30-day postoperative morbidity, mortality and 2-year overall survival (OS), including analysis of risk factors for postoperative morbidity or mortality and prognostic factors for 2-year OS.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection with an SB Knife® for the treatment of subcardial gastric leiomyoma.

Surgery has been considered the main treatment for submucosal tumors (SMTs). However, endoscopic resection is currently accepted for gastric SMTs smaller than 3 cm. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is considered the technique of choice, and submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection has successful results with low complication rates according to the recent meta-analysis by Cao et al.

Determination of the Fluoride Content in Water of Aqueducts of Cauca (Colombia) by Ion Exchange Chromatography.

Water for human consumption is the main source of fluoride exposure. The concentration in water should not exceed 1 mg/L of fluoride since, at higher levels; it increases the risk of dental fluorosis, among other adverse effects. The fluoride content of 149 water samples from different aqueducts in Cauca (Colombia) has been determined by ion exchange chromatography with the aim of fluoride risk assessment.

Caustic ingestion: development and validation of a prognostic score.

Background: Caustic ingestion is a potentially severe condition and early identification of poor outcome is essential to improve management; however, prediction based on endoscopy alone can overestimate severity. This study aimed to develop and validate a prognostic score.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was designed to include all consecutive patients aged > 15 years who presented with caustic ingestion between 1995 and 2017.

A rare case of acute cholangitis after endoscopic ampullectomy.

Endoscopic ampullectomy is indicated for the resection of non-invasive papillary adenomas in selected patients. Cholangitis is an uncommon complication (0-2%) that may be secondary to contamination during the procedure, poor emptying of the bile duct and prosthesis dysfunction or migration. Placement of a prophylactic biliary stent after the resection is not well established.

A New Classification System for Pilon Fractures Based on CT Scan: An Independent Interobserver and Intraobserver Agreement Evaluation.

Background Data: A new pilon fracture classification system based on CT scan data was recently published, showing almost perfect interobserver and intraobserver agreement among the authors who developed it. However, an independent assessment has not been done.

Objective: To do an independent agreement evaluation of the new pilon fracture classification system with physicians with different levels of expertise in the management of pilon fractures.

Specific lid-base contacts in the 26s proteasome control the conformational switching required for substrate degradation.

The 26S proteasome is essential for proteostasis and the regulation of vital processes through ATP-dependent degradation of ubiquitinated substrates. To accomplish the multi-step degradation process, the proteasome's regulatory particle, consisting of lid and base subcomplexes, undergoes major conformational changes whose origin is unknown. Investigating the proteasome, we found that peripheral interactions between the lid subunit Rpn5 and the base AAA+ ATPase ring are important for stabilizing the substrate-engagement-competent state and coordinating the conformational switch to processing states upon substrate engagement.

Association of elevated serum triglyceride levels with a more severe course of acute pancreatitis: Cohort analysis of 1457 patients.

Background: Previous publications have reported an association between hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) and severity of acute pancreatitis, but this relationship remains somewhat controversial.

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of acute pancreatitis according to serum triglyceride levels on admission.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data, which included all consecutive cases of acute pancreatitis admitted to a tertiary hospital (January 2002-December 2014).

The current situation of digestive endoscopy units in the Valencian Community.

Introduction And Objectives: in view of the advances made over the past few years, digestive endoscopy units must adapt to an increased demand and the development of novel techniques. However, the actual status of these units is virtually unknown and is limited to few surveys from over a decade ago. Thus, a new survey was performed of the current situation of endoscopy units in the Valencian Community.

Effects of vibrotactile feedback and grasp interface compliance on perception and control of a sensorized myoelectric hand.

Current myoelectric prosthetic limbs are limited in their ability to provide direct sensory feedback to users, which increases attentional demands and reliance on visual cues. Vibrotactile sensory substitution (VSS), which can be used to provide sensory feedback in a non-invasive manner has demonstrated some improvement in myoelectric hand control. In this work, we developed and tested two VSS configurations: one with a single burst-rate modulated actuator and another with a spatially distributed array of five coin tactors.

Substrate-engaged 26 proteasome structures reveal mechanisms for ATP-hydrolysis-driven translocation.

The 26 proteasome is the primary eukaryotic degradation machine and thus is critically involved in numerous cellular processes. The heterohexameric adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) motor of the proteasome unfolds and translocates targeted protein substrates into the open gate of a proteolytic core while a proteasomal deubiquitinase concomitantly removes substrate-attached ubiquitin chains. However, the mechanisms by which ATP hydrolysis drives the conformational changes responsible for these processes have remained elusive.

The aim of the present study was to compare the morbi-mortality, cost-benefit and long-term oncological outcomes of both therapeutic options.

Methods: This is a prospective, comparative, controlled, non-randomized study (2005-2010) performed in a specialized unit.

What's the Key to Unlocking the Proteasome's Gate?

In this issue of Structure, Bolten et al. (2016) describe the organization of the mycobacterial proteasome in complex with the ATP-independent bacterial proteasome activator (Bpa, PafE). They confirm several activation motifs employed by archaea and eukaryotes and highlight differences that pose Bpa as a novel architectural class of proteasome activators.

Ectopic craniopharyngioma of the fourth ventricle in a patient with Gardner syndrome.

Ectopic craniopharyngioma is uncommon and a craniopharyngioma confined purely within the fourth ventricle is extremely rare. We report a craniopharyngioma of the fourth ventricle in a 20-year-old man with Gardner syndrome. Imaging characteristics of craniopharyngiomas and fourth ventricle lesions are discussed with a review of the literature regarding the pathogenesis of craniopharyngiomas and the possible association with Gardner syndrome.

DSF Guided Refolding As A Novel Method Of Protein Production.

The Anfinsen hypothesis, the demonstration of which led to the Nobel prize in Chemistry, posits that all information required to determine a proteins' three dimensional structure is contained within its amino acid sequence. This suggests that it should be possible, in theory, to fold any protein in vitro. In practice, however, protein production by refolding is challenging because suitable refolding conditions must be empirically determined for each protein and can be painstaking.

A redox regulatory system critical for mycobacterial survival in macrophages and biofilm development.

Survival of M. tuberculosis in host macrophages requires the eukaryotic-type protein kinase G, PknG, but the underlying mechanism has remained unknown. Here, we show that PknG is an integral component of a novel redox homeostatic system, RHOCS, which includes the ribosomal protein L13 and RenU, a Nudix hydrolase encoded by a gene adjacent to pknG.

CT diagnosis of appendicitis in children: comparison of orthogonal planes and assessment of contrast opacification of the appendix.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine which plane is best for identification of the appendix and to assess if opacification of the appendix impacts visualization.

Methods: Retrospective review of 218 computed tomography examinations performed for suspected appendicitis was conducted by 2 pediatric radiologists evaluating conspicuity of the appendix depending on orthogonal plane and enteric contrast.

Results: Of the 180 cases in which the appendix was visualized, 154 were performed with multiplanar reformations.
