Article Synopsis
  • A study on 219 older patients with type 2 diabetes aimed to investigate the relationship between liver fibrosis, liver steatosis, and cognitive impairment.
  • Results showed that a significant number of patients had mild cognitive impairment (53.88%) or dementia (16.43%), and those with moderate to high risks of liver fibrosis were more likely to have cognitive issues.
  • The study concluded that liver fibrosis, indicated by a FIB-4 score greater than 1.54, is linked to cognitive impairment, suggesting it could be a potential biomarker for detecting cognitive decline in older diabetes patients.

Human inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and canine inflammatory mammary cancer (IMC) are highly aggressive neoplastic diseases that share numerous characteristics. In IBC and IMC, chemotherapy produces a limited pathological response and anti-androgen therapies have been of interest for breast cancer treatment. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the effect of a therapy based on bicalutamide, a non-steroidal anti-androgen, with doxorubicin and docetaxel chemotherapy on cell proliferation, migration, tumor growth, and steroid-hormone secretion.

Ensuring the effective management of every rhinoceros population is crucial for securing a future for the species, especially considering the escalating global threat of poaching and the challenges faced in captive breeding programs for this endangered species. Steroid hormones play pivotal roles in regulating diverse biological processes, making fecal hormonal determinations a valuable non-invasive tool for monitoring adrenal and gonadal endocrinologies and assessing reproductive status, particularly in endangered species. The purpose of this study was to develop a statistical model for predicting the sex of white rhinoceroses using hormonal determinations obtained from a single fecal sample.

The catalytic dehydrogenation of alkanes constitutes a key step for the industrial conversion of these inert sp-bonded carbon chains into other valuable unsaturated chemicals. To this end, platinum-based materials are among the most widely used catalysts. In this work, we characterize the thermal dehydrogenation of -octane (-CH) on Pt(111) under ultra-high vacuum using synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption and scanning tunneling microscopy, combined with calculations.

Introduction: Although Hill-Sachs lesions are frequently associated with recurrent anterior glenohumeral dislocation, understanding of biomechanics and the importance of having an engaging or non-engaging lesion has only been recently studied at more depth. It is now widely accepted that engaging lesions benefit from surgery due to the high risk of symptom recurrence if left untreated. Techniques that have been described include capsular shift procedures, rotational osteotomies of the humeral head, or even femoral or humeral head allografts.

Purpose: The use of nonsealed radioactive sources can lead to skin contamination due to radiological accidents and staff oversight. This contamination has been shown to contribute considerably to the total skin dose received by nuclear medicine technicians and can easily exceed the limit of 500 mSv/year established by the current regulations. To assess the severity of contamination, it is necessary to estimate the skin dose through the use of suitable skin dose rate conversion factors.

Evidence shows that participants performing a continuous visual categorization task respond slower following the presentation of a task-irrelevant sound deviating from an otherwise repetitive or predictable auditory context (deviant sound among standard sounds). Here, for the first time, we explored the role of the environmental context (instrumentalized as a task-irrelevant background picture) in this effect. In two experiments, participants categorized left/right arrows while ignoring irrelevant sounds and background pictures of forest and city scenes.
