Unusual presentation of glomus tympanicum tumour: New bone formation in the middle ear.

The objective of this study is to increase awareness of the rare presentation, diagnostic difficulties and management of glomus tympanicum of the middle ear. A 49 years old male, with a background of hypertension and epilepsy, presented with a two month history of left sided conductive hearing loss, pulsatile tinnitus and headache. Clinically and radiologically a diagnosis of glomus tympanicum was made.

Is there a change in the epidemiology of nasal fractures in females in the UK?

Objective: To determine whether there is a change in the epidemiology of nasal fractures in females in the UK, and the potential contribution of the 'ladette' culture.

Methods: This paper reports a multi-centre retrospective study. Operating theatre data for all females who underwent manipulation of nasal fractures under anaesthesia between 2002 and 2009 were analysed.

Severe hypo-osmotic hyponatraemia due to chylous leak following radical neck dissection.

Chylous leak is a documented complication of radical neck dissection with well recognised morbidities, including wound breakdown, hypovolaemia and hypoalbuminaemia. Other less well-documented electrolyte imbalances can also ensue. We aim to raise awareness about hypo-osmotic hyponatraemia as a potentially fatal, commonly overlooked complication of high-output chylous leaks.

Follow-up in head and neck cancer: patients' perspective.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine head and neck cancer patients' perspective of their follow-up regime and to suggest ways in which these perspectives can be incorporated into current practice.

Design/methodology/approach: This is a prospective survey-based study. A total of 263 patients consecutively attending a head and neck cancer clinic completed a survey about their experience of the follow-up process in the post-treatment period between January 2009 and October 2009.

Soft, fortified ice-cream for head and neck cancer patients: a useful first step in nutritional and swallowing difficulties associated with multi-modal management.

Patients with head and neck cancer have complex swallowing and nutritional concerns. Most patients are malnourished, and treatment modalities within the aerodigestive tract have profound effects on future swallowing and nutrition. The objective of this study is to investigate whether the introduction of fortified soft ice-cream to post-operative head and neck cancer patients would increase compliance with oral-feeding regimes.

Endoscopic management of an internal laryngopyocele presenting with acute airway obstruction.

Statement of Problem. Laryngocele is a rare laryngeal disease, where there is an abnormal dilatation of the saccule of the laryngeal ventricle. It can either be internal or external, and a laryngopyocele is a rare complication of this anomaly.

Citrobacter freundii causing pharyngitis and secondary retropharyngeal abscess with intrathoracic extension to the diaphragm: minimally invasive management of a rare case.

Introduction: Citrobacter freundii is a rare but potentially aggressive cause of pharyngitis which may progress to retropharyngeal abscess with diaphragmatic extension.

Objective: To raise awareness of: (1) citrobacter as a potential cause of head and neck infection, including retropharyngeal abscess; (2) a novel surgical approach to draining such an abscess; and (3) citrobacter's particular biological properties which may affect the clinical course.
