Purpose: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) trial 22991 (NCT00021450) showed that 6 months of concomitant and adjuvant androgen suppression (AS) improves event- (EFS, Phoenix) and clinical disease-free survival (DFS) of intermediate- and high-risk localized prostatic carcinoma, treated by external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) at 70-78 Gy. We report the long-term results in intermediate-risk patients treated with 74 or 78 Gy EBRT, as per current guidelines.

Patient And Methods: Of 819 patients randomly assigned between EBRT or EBRT plus AS started on day 1 of EBRT, 481 entered with intermediate risk (International Union Against Cancer TNM 1997 cT1b-c or T2a with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) ≥ 10 ng/mL or Gleason ≤ 7 and PSA ≤ 20 ng/mL, N0M0) and had EBRT planned at 74 (342 patients, 71.

Introduction: In 2017 it was decided to revise the European Core Curriculum for Radiation Oncology/Radiotherapy to produce a 4th edition. The aims of the ESTRO curriculum are to develop comparable standards for training across Europe and to facilitate free movement of specialists across borders. It is also hoped that it will improve the level of training across Europe and will make the non-medical expert roles more explicit.

We herein present a case of a 24-year-old patient with a cT4N+ rectal cancer who developed Fournier's gangrene (FG) 1 week after the completion of preoperative chemoradiotherapy. The patient was promptly referred to the surgical department where she was treated with antibiotics and repeated surgical debridement. FG is a rare and life-threatening situation that needs to be managed aggressively with no delay.

Penile Mondor's disease is a rare condition characterized by sclerosing thrombophlebitis of the superficial dorsal penile vein. Usually its causes are benign, but it is also evident in cancer patients. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with a cT4 anal cancer (infiltration of corpora spongiosa and penile bulb), associated with extensive loco-regional lymphadenopathy, who developed painful lumps in the midline of the anterior penile surface while receiving radical chemoradiotherapy.

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is a very rare manifestation in patients diagnosed with esophagogastric junction and gastric cancer. Its prognosis is ominous and therapy outcomes are disappointing. Herein, we present two patients; one initially diagnosed with gastric cancer and leptomeningeal carcinomatosis but no other evidence of metastatic disease and the other one initially diagnosed with esophagogastric junction cancer, who recurred solitary with leptomeningeal seedings several years after the initial diagnosis and treatment.

The attempt to design cost-effective adaptation policies incorporating non-market values to inhibit climate change impacts on water resources may increase the interest in applying the Benefit Transfer method. Benefit Transfer is a practical way to consider non-market values using functions and estimates acquired through primary valuation methods from other sites. Among the primary methods, Choice Experiments appear to particularly accommodate Benefit Transfer.

Climate projection models for the Southern Mediterranean basin indicate a strong drought trend. This pattern is anticipated to affect a range of services derived from river ecosystems and consecutively deteriorate the sectoral outputs and household welfare. This paper aims to evaluate local residents' adaptation preferences for the Piave River basin in Italy.

Background: Since scarce data exist on the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Caucasian patients, we attempted to elucidate the responsible molecular pathways in this patient population.

Methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissue samples from 107 patients, diagnosed with locally-advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma and treated with chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy, were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for the expression of the following proteins: E-cadherin, P-cadherin, Fascin-1, Cyclin D1, COX-2, EGFR, VEGF-A, VEGF-C, VEGFR-2, VEGFR-3, ERCC1, p53, p63, Ki67, MAPT, phospho-p44/42MAPK, PTEN, phospho-AKT, phospho-mTOR, and phospho-GSK-3β. EBER status was assessed by in situ hybridization.

Radiological and nuclear medicine imaging modalities used for assessing bone metastases treatment response include plain and digitalised radiography (XR), skeletal scintigraphy (SS), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [(18)F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and PET/CT. Here we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these assessment modalities as evident through different clinical trials. Additionally, we present the more established response criteria of the International Union Against Cancer and the World Health Organization and compare them with newer MD Anderson criteria.

Article Synopsis
  • Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis (ISCM) is a rare but serious condition seen in 0.1-0.9% of cancer patients, leading to a high mortality rate of 80% within 3-4 months.
  • A case study of a woman with colon cancer illustrates the onset of ISCM while undergoing chemotherapy, manifesting as paralysis in both legs and weakness in the arms.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment, preferably with external beam radiotherapy, may stabilize symptoms and improve neurological deficits, although the role of surgery is not fully defined due to the lack of comparative trials.

Background: Thymomas are the most common tumor arising in the anterior mediastinum. Surgery is the cornerstone for the management of these tumors. The role of postoperative radiotherapy in Masaoka stage II thymomas remains controversial, but it is well established in the advanced stages.

Nitrogen-containing biphosphonates are a group of medications that are increasingly used in the management of Paget's disease, fibrous dysplasia, osteoporosis, multiple myeloma and metastatic prostate or breast cancer bone disease. On 2004 it was established that nitrogen-containing biphosphonates may induce jaw osteonecrosis and since then, a substantial number of publications has supported this finding. Jaw osteonecrosis may be asymptomatic, lasting for about a year or symptomatic, accompanied with mild or severe pain.

Radiopharmaceuticals are known to interact with the blood components (i.e. the red blood cells, serum proteins etc) but so far, there have been no data regarding their purely mechanical trapping in thrombi.

A sixty five year old female patient carrying a double lumen subclavian catheter, with severe right-sided heart failure, was subjected to lung perfusion scan in order to rule out pulmonary embolism. Administration of Tc-99m macroaggregate albumin ((99m)Tc-MAA), via a double lumen (Hickman) subclavian line, resulted in trapping almost half of the injected dose in the right atrium, at the tip of the subclavian catheter. There was no evidence of pulmonary embolism.

The oncophilic complex of technetium-99m labeled pentavalent dimercaptosuccinic acid (99mTc(V)-DMSA) has been successfully used for the detection of primary and metastatic medullary thyroid cancer and for imaging various soft tissue tumors like lung, brain and prostate cancer. In this article, the role of 99mTc(V)-DMSA in the diagnosis of the primary tumor and metastases of osteosarcoma patients as compared to the 99mTc-MDP scan and the CT scan was studied. Twenty-eight patients with bone disease were referred to the Nuclear Medicine Department of Saint Savas Oncology Hospital in Athens from the Orthopedics Department of the same Hospital.

A 46-year-old man was referred to our department for a Tc-99m MDP bone scan after he was admitted to our hospital with diffuse bone pain and the subsequent finding of multiple mixed type (lytic-blastic) lesions on routine x-rays. The Tc-99m MDP scan was highly suspicious for malignancy and, therefore, a Tc-99m MIBI scan was performed, which also revealed abnormal uptake in all regions with increased osteoblastic activity. Clinical chemistry and further workup revealed a highly elevated serum alkaline phosphatase and increased excretion of hydroxyproline in the urine.
