Background: The diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is challenging because no single test has consistently demonstrated an adequate discriminative potential. The combination of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) with adequate thresholds is well established.
