Background: Jugular venous aneurysms are rare, usually congenital, and present particular problems in management. Whether to perform surgery or not is controversial, cosmetic considerations being the primary factor in the decision.

Methods: Over the past nine years, 10 patients with unilateral jugular venous aneurysms have been closely followed up in our department.

An open study of efficiency and safety of atarax (hydroxisine) enrolled 55 outpatients (23 males and 32 females, mean age 45.91 +/- 1.91) with generalized anxious and somatoform disorders running as cardioneurosis as well as nosogenic reactions (maladaptation), manifestations of cardiovascular pathology (acute myocardial infarction, angina of effort functional class II-III, postinfarction cardiosclerosis, essential hypertension in 5, 13, 2 and 5 patients, respectively).

The objective of the study was to determine the influence of blood loss volume on lipid peroxidation (LP) process and antioxidant system (AOS) state in the patients with a heavy combined trauma. The studies were proceeded in 36 patients with a heavy combined trauma. The mean age of the patients was 40 +/- 2.

Hippocampal slices treated with cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin for three min during the sectioning (45 min) or aspirin (0.5 min) in long term (up to 5 days) preservation in periodic nocturnal hypothermia were studied morphofunctionally using light microscopy and electrophysiological registration of induced population responses of area CAI to stimulation of Schaffers collaterals. Structural disorders were revealed in control slices as early as the third hour of incubation and they were destroyed following the first hypothermal challenge (24 hrs following preparation).

The presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and their specificity to myeloperoxidase, lactoferrin and elastase were studied in 27 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease), including nine in mild stage of the disease (group I) and 18 in active or severe stage (group II). Serum samples were investigated for ANCA prevalence by indirect immunofluorescent technique and fixed neutrophil ELISA; the reactivity to myeloperoxidase, lactoferrin and elastase was measured by ELISA. ANCA were found in 55.

46 patients with craniocerebral trauma combined with chest, abdominal, locomotor injuries were hospitalized to the critical care unit. At admission, blood pressure was low, blood loss reached 28% of circulating blood volume. Serum levels of hydrocortisone, nitrite, the activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) were measured at admission, on admission hour 4, 24, day 3 and 7.

The study is based on a sample of 965 children living in Oulu region (Finland), who were monitored for acute middle ear infections from birth to the age of two years. We introduce a nonparametrically defined intensity model for ear infections, which involves both fixed and time dependent covariates, such as calendar time, current age, length of breast-feeding time until present, or current type of day care. Unmeasured heterogeneity, which manifests itself in frequent infections in some children and rare in others and which cannot be explained in terms of the known covariates, is modelled by using individual frailty parameters.

A variant of liquid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) with murine monoclonal antibodies E7(B2-1) to human alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is described. AFP levels were measured by RIA with a commercial DIAplus kit in the sera of patients with germinogenic tumors and of pregnant women.

Eighty-six children with burn injuries hospitalized in intensive care wards during the acute period of burn disease were examined. They were divided into 3 groups: with involvement of up to 30%, 31-60%, and more than 61% of body surface. The children were examined during and after shock.

During screening of a gene library of Streptococcus pyogenes type M15 for fibrinogen-binding material, a protein of approximately 100 kDa, encoded outside the vir region, was found. DNA sequencing revealed this component to be identical to protein F, a fibronectin-binding protein. Isolation of the recombinant protein, termed F15, was performed by the use of fibrinogen affinity chromatography.

The influence of cyclooxygenase inhibitors on functional stability of hippocampal slices, determined by electrophysiological criteria of recovery after slicing and long-term maintainence of population activity, was studied. Transient (3 min) treatment of slices during slicing with indomethacin (45 microM) or aspirin (0.5 mM) allowed registration of the population responses from the second minute.

The use of computerized heart rhythm assessment in diagnosis of patients at high risk of ischemic heart disease during epidemiological surveys is discussed. The method has been shown to be of value in detection of ischemic heart lesions developing in menopausal women. The method can be used to monitor patients in the course of long-term follow-up.

The article deals with combined endoscopic treatment of cholelithiasis complicated by pathological changes of the terminal part of the common bile duct in 104 patients: in 81 of them there was choledocholithiasis (5 of them had the Mirizzi syndrome). 15 patients had choledocholithiasis and papillostenosis, 8 patients had papillostenosis. Papillosphincterotomy with laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed in 50 patients, in 4 senile patients only papillosphincterotomy was performed.

A comparative analysis of two types of cryoprotectants, antifreeze glycoproteins from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and carbohydrates from hemolymph of amphypoid crustacean (Gammarus lacustris) has been performed. Both glycoprotein and carbohydrate antifreezes effectively decreased the freezing point of water solutions and diminished the size of ice crystals formed. Noncolligative and colligative mechanisms of action are characteristic correspondingly for glycoproteins and carbohydrates.

We examined 522 persons exposed to different types of non-ionizing radiation (UV, IR lasers) in the working environment. The control group consisted of 250 persons. The clinico-statistical analysis of occupational eye pathology depending on etiological factors, exposure time and age is presented.

Effect of an ADP/ATP antiporter inhibitor carboxyatractylate on permeability of inner mitochondrial membrane was studied. Carboxyatractylate induced two uncoupling systems: Ca(2+)-dependent pore and another system which was sensitive to an inhibitor of calcium uniporter ruthenium red (apparently, Ca(2+)-recycle). Extent of Ca(2+)-recycle induction correlates with a fraction of mitochondrial population which underwent permeabilization; inhibition of permeabilization by cyclosporin A prevents induction of the recycle.

The paper describes the use of the expert's error technique to provide evidence and pool medical specifications for an electron amplifying stethophonoendoscope, a medical diagnostic device. It illustrates the impact of variations in amplitude-frequency responses (AFR) on the auscultation properties of the devise. An AFR variation of only 10-12 dB can distort sound perception at auscultation.
