Article Synopsis
  • * This study investigated the effects of spore-forming probiotic bacteria (MegaSporeBiotic) and metformin in rats treated with DEXA, aiming to see if they could reduce these negative metabolic effects.
  • * Results indicated that the combination treatment with probiotics and metformin improved cholesterol levels in the DEXA-treated rats, hinting at potential benefits of using probiotics to manage glucocorticoid-induced metabolic disturbances.

Background: Paraganglioma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor derived from chromaffin cells. The overproduction of catecholamines accounts for the presenting symptoms and cardiovascular complications. The clinical presentation frequently overlaps with the associated cardiac diseases, delaying the diagnosis.

Diabetes mellitus is a disease with multiple gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, bloating) whose pathogenesis is multifactorial. The most important of these factors is the enteric nervous system, also known as the "second brain"; a part of the peripheral nervous system capable of functioning independently of the central nervous system. Modulation of the enteric nervous system can be done by short-chain fatty acids, which are bacterial metabolites of the intestinal microbiota.

Atherosclerosis and its clinical manifestations, coronary and cerebral artery diseases, are the most common cause of death worldwide. The main pathophysiological mechanism for these complications is the rupture of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques and subsequent thrombosis. Pathological studies of the vulnerable lesions showed that more frequently, plaques rich in lipids and with a high level of inflammation, responsible for mild or moderate stenosis, are more prone to rupture, leading to acute events.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving Wistar albino male rats explored the potential for probiotics, amino acids, and immunoglobulin supplements to mitigate NSAID-induced gut damage by restoring a healthy microbiome.
  • * Results indicated that using probiotics, either alone or alongside other supplements, could be a promising strategy to prevent gastrointestinal harm associated with NSAID use.

Cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury is a debilitating medical condition, currently with only a limited amount of therapies aimed at protecting the cerebral parenchyma. Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that the RNA-induced silencing complex either degrade or prevent target messenger RNAs from being translated and thus, can modulate the synthesis of target proteins. In the neurological field, miRNAs have been evaluated as potential regulators in brain development processes and pathological events.
