Objective: Our primary objectives are to assess whether intraarticular corticosteroid injections are superior to saline injections with regards to thumb base pain after 4 weeks, and to compare the efficacy of steroid injections, saline injections, and an occupational therapy intervention on thumb base pain after 12 weeks in people with painful inflammatory osteoarthritis (OA) of the first carpometacarpal (CMC-1) joint.

Design: In this three-armed, double-blind, randomized multicenter trial, 354 participants with painful inflammatory CMC-1 OA from six Norwegian hospitals are recruited. Participants are randomized 1:1:1 to intraarticular steroid or saline injections in the CMC-1 joint or a multimodal occupational therapy intervention.

Aims: To investigate the association between alcohol consumption registered daily with a digital smartphone-based diary and concentration of phosphatidylethanol (PEth) 16:0/18:1 in a population without a known alcohol use disorder (AUD), and evaluate whether prospective registration of alcohol consumption is better than retrospective registration and if the association between alcohol intake and PEth was affected by sex or body mass index (BMI).

Methods: A total of 41 women and 21 men without AUD-diagnosis registered their alcohol consumption prospectively with a digital diary for 14 days, and retrospectively with the Timeline Followback method in the same time interval. PEth was measured before and after the registration period.

Methadone has two enantiomers, which exhibit differences in pharmacological effects, with R-methadone being the active and S-methadone the inactive enantiomer. A robust, simple and rapid method for chiral separation of the two enantiomers in serum samples using ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPSFC-MSMS) has been developed and validated. Enantiomeric separation was achieved using a Chiralpak IH-3 column with a mobile phase consisting of CO and 30mM ammonium acetate in methanol/water (98/2, v/v).

The current work introduces a system for fully automatic tracking of native glenohumeral kinematics in stereo-radiography sequences. The proposed method first applies convolutional neural networks to obtain segmentation and semantic key point predictions in biplanar radiograph frames. Preliminary bone pose estimates are computed by solving a non-convex optimization problem with semidefinite relaxations to register digitized bone landmarks to semantic key points.

Representative data of asymptomatic, native-knee kinematics is important when studying changes in knee function across the lifespan. High-speed stereo radiography (HSSR) provides a reliable measure of knee kinematics to <1 mm of translation and 1° of rotation, but studies often have limited statistical power to make comparisons between groups or measure the contribution of individual variability. The purpose of this study is to examine in vivo condylar kinematics to quantify the transverse center-of-rotation, or pivot, location across the flexion range and challenge the medial-pivot paradigm in asymptomatic knee kinematics.

Methods: From a cohort of 65,200 participants within the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT study), we identified all women who developed breast cancer within a 22-year follow-up period. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, 28 metabolites and 89 lipoprotein subfractions were quantified from prediagnostic serum samples of future breast cancer patients and matching controls (n = 1199 case-control pairs).

The standing lunge is an activity commonly used to quantify in-vivo knee kinematics with fluoroscopy. The ability to perform the standing lunge varies between subjects and can necessitate movement accommodations to successfully complete the desired range of motion. The aim of the current study was to establish a controlled and reproducible model to study metabolic changes during oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) in rat brain using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-compatible perfusion system. Rat brains were cut into 400-μm thick slices and perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) in a 10-mm NMR tube inside a 600-MHz NMR spectrometer. Four experimental conditions were tested: (1) continuous perfusion with aCSF with glucose and normoxia, and (2) 30-, (3) 60-, or (4) 120-min periods of OGD followed by reperfusion of aCSF containing glucose and normoxia.

Secondary femoral fractures after the successful plate-screw fixation of a primary Vancouver type B1 periprosthetic femoral fracture (PFF) have been associated with the altered state of stress/strain in the femur as the result of plating. The laterally implanted condyle-spanning plate-screw constructs have shown promises clinically in avoiding secondary bone and implant failures as compared with shorter diaphyseal plates. Though the condyle-spanning plating has been hypothesized to avoid stress concentration in the femoral diaphysis through increasing the working length of the plate, biomechanical evidence is lacking on how plate length may impact the stress/strain state of the implanted femur.

Computational modeling is of growing importance in orthopedics and biomechanics as a tool to understand differences in pathology and predict outcomes from surgical interventions. However, the computational models of the knee have historically relied on in vitro data to create and calibrate model material properties due to the unavailability of accurate in vivo data. This work demonstrates the design and use of a custom device to quantify anterior-posterior (AP) and internal-external (IE) in vivo knee laxity, with an accuracy similar to existing in vitro methods.
