The WHO annually reports an increasing abuse of new psychoactive substances (NPS), which are a heterogeneous group of synthetic drugs and are consumed as substitute for controlled drugs of abuse. In this work, we focused on highly potent derivatives such those of phenethylamine (2C), N-2-methoxybenzyl phenethylamine (NBOMes), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and fentanyl. Severe to fatal intoxications were described due to their high potency.

Article Synopsis
  • Peroxisomes are important in regulating inflammation, especially in myeloid immune cells, but their specific roles are not well understood.
  • The study found that the compound 4-phenyl butyric acid effectively induces peroxisomes in certain types of macrophages, which helps reduce proinflammatory responses triggered by LPS.
  • The results suggest that activated peroxisomes can decrease the stability of the proinflammatory protein COX-2, and the study highlights a new function of peroxisomes in controlling inflammation in macrophages.

Low concentrations of oxidized low density lipoprotein (OxLDL) are cytoprotective for phagocytes, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated signaling pathways used by OxLDL to attenuate apoptosis in monocytic cells. OxLDL at 25-50 mug/ml inhibited staurosporine-induced apoptosis in THP-1 cells and mouse peritoneal macrophages, and it was cytoprotective in human primary monocytes upon serum withdrawal.
