Objectives: This study investigated the feasibility of visual and quantitative assessment of coronary vessel wall contrast enhancement (CE) for detection of symptomatic atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) and subclinical coronary vasculitis in autoimmune inflammatory disease (systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE]), as well as the association with aortic stiffness, an established marker of risk.

Background: Coronary CE by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is a novel noninvasive approach to visualize gadolinium contrast uptake within the coronary artery vessel wall.

Methods: A total of 75 subjects (CAD: n = 25; SLE: n = 27; control: n = 23) underwent CMR imaging using a 3-T clinical scanner.

Purpose: To compare delayed-enhancement (DE) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with an elastin-specific contrast agent and unenhanced black-blood (BB) MR imaging with regard to vessel wall delineation and assessment of vascular remodeling and to test the prospective value for predicting plaque disruption in a rabbit model of atherosclerosis.

Materials And Methods: All procedures were approved by the animal ethics committee. Atherosclerosis was induced in 14 New Zealand White rabbits by means of a 1% cholesterol diet and endothelial denudation.

The recently described angiographic BCIS-1 Myocardial Jeopardy Score (BCIS-JS) provides a semi-quantitative estimate of the extent of coronary artery disease (CAD). It is simple to use and applicable to all patients including those with bypass grafts. Several coronary disease scoring systems have been developed to predict procedural risk during revascularization. Many vary in complexity, do not specifically account for myocardium at risk, and are not applicable across all patient subsets. Background: Endothelial dysfunction promotes atherosclerosis and precedes acute cardiovascular events. We investigated whether in vivo magnetic resonance imaging with the use of an albumin-binding contrast agent, gadofosveset, could detect endothelial damage associated with atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE(-/-)) mice. Furthermore, we tested whether magnetic resonance imaging could noninvasively assess endothelial function by measuring the endothelial-dependent vasodilation in response to acetylcholine.

Background: The efficacy of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) for coronary collateral growth promotion and thus impending myocardial salvage has not been studied so far, to our best knowledge.

Methods And Results: In 52 patients with chronic stable coronary artery disease, age 62+/-11 years, the effect on a marker of myocardial infarct size (ECG ST segment elevation) and on quantitative collateral function during a 1-minute coronary balloon occlusion was tested in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind fashion. The study protocol before coronary intervention consisted of occlusive surface and intracoronary lead ECG recording as well as collateral flow index (CFI, no unit) measurement in a stenotic and a > or =1 normal coronary artery before and after a 2-week period with subcutaneous G-CSF (10 microg/kg; n=26) or placebo (n=26).
