Introduction: The use of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in low- and middle-income countries remains controversial. The aim of this secondary analysis was to observe factors associated with visiting a TBA in addition to a skilled nurse for antepartum care and how this additional care was associated with birth characteristics and outcomes.

Methods: The study included a convenience sample of women living in Southwestern Guatemala enrolled in a community nursing program between October 1, 2018, and December 3, 2019.

Unlabelled: (NT3), through activation of its tropomyosin-related kinase receptor C (TrkC), modulates neuronal survival and neural stem cell differentiation. It is widely distributed in peripheral tissues (especially vessels and pancreas) and this ubiquitous pattern suggests a role for NT3, outside the nervous system and related to metabolic functions. The presence of the NT3/TrkC pathway in the adipose tissue (AT) has never been investigated.

Objective: This analysis describes the interpregnancy interval (time from livebirth to subsequent conception) in a convenience sample of women living in Southwest Guatemala and the association of antepartum characteristics and postpartum outcomes with a short interpregnancy interval (< 24 months).

Methods: This is an observational study of a convenience sample of women enrolled in the Madres Sanas community antenatal/postnatal nursing program supported by the Center for Human Development in Southwest Trifinio, Guatemala, between October 1, 2018 and October 1, 2019. We observed the distribution of interpregnancy intervals among the population of women with a reported date of last live birth, and used bivariate comparisons to compare women with a short interpregnancy interval (< 24 months) to those with an optimal interval ([Formula: see text] 24 months) by antepartum, obstetric and delivery, and postpartum outcomes.

Importance: To verify districts for elimination of blinding trachoma, the World Health Organization requires a population-based surveillance survey for follicular trachoma (TF) and trachomatous trichiasis (TT) 2 years after mass drug administration (MDA) activities have ceased. However, it is unknown if 2 years provides enough time to discover reemergence.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of trachoma from surveys among 4 districts in Nepal (Dailekh, Dang, Surkhet, and Kanchanpur) that had surveillance intervals of 2, 4, 8, and 10 years, respectively, after cessation of MDA.

We assessed the antiangiogenic effects of subconjunctival injection of Fc-endostatin (FcE) using a human vascular endothelial growth factor-induced rabbit corneal neovascularization model. Angiogenesis was induced in rabbit corneas through intrastromal implantations of VEGF polymer implanted 2 mm from the limbus. NZW rabbits were separated into groups receiving twice weekly subconjunctival injections of either saline; 25 mg/mL bevacizumab; 2 mg/mL FcE; or 20 mg/mL FcE.

Purpose: Gamma irradiated corneas in which the donor keratocytes and endothelial cells are eliminated are effective as corneal lamellar and glaucoma patch grafts. In addition, gamma irradiation causes collagen cross inking, which stiffens collagen fibrils. Expression of yeast mitochondrial genes depends on specific translational activators acting on the 5'-untranslated region of their target mRNAs. Mss51p is a translational factor for cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) mRNA and a key player in down-regulating Cox1p expression when subunits with which it normally interacts are not available. Mss51p probably acts on the 5'-untranslated region of COX1 mRNA to initiate translation and on the coding sequence itself to facilitate elongation.

However, the exact mechanism by which mutated huntingtin could cause bioenergetic dysfunction is still unknown. We have constructed a stable inducible yeast model of HD by expressing a human huntingtin fragment containing a mutant polyglutamine tract of 103Q fused to green fluorescent protein (GFP), and a control expressing a wild-type 25Q domain fused to GFP in a wild-type strain.

Mutations in SURF1, the human homologue of yeast SHY1, are responsible for Leigh's syndrome, a neuropathy associated with cytochrome oxidase (COX) deficiency. Previous studies of the yeast model of this disease showed that mutant forms of Mss51p, a translational activator of COX1 mRNA, partially rescue the COX deficiency of shy1 mutants by restoring normal synthesis of the mitochondrially encoded Cox1p subunit of COX. Here we present evidence showing that Cox1p synthesis is reduced in most COX mutants but is restored to that of wild type by the same mss51 mutation that suppresses shy1 mutants.
