Egg-derived viruses are the only available seed material for influenza vaccine production. Vaccine manufacturing is done in embryonated chicken eggs, MDCK or Vero cells. In order to contribute to efficient production of influenza vaccines, we investigate whether the quality of inactivated vaccines is influenced by the propagation substrate.

A growing body of evidence indicates that the activation of endogenous retroviral sequences might be involved in the transformation of melanocytes. In this study, we investigated the effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the expression of human endogenous retrovirus type K (HERV-K) in melanoma cells and non-melanoma cells in vitro.

The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of AZT to inhibit the growth of human melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo. In cytotoxicity assays, treatment of cells with varying concentrations of AZT-induced inhibition of cell growth and apoptosis in three human melanoma cell lines without affecting the growth of nontumorigenic cells.

In this study particles derived from different melanoma cell lines and from melanoma cells of a lymph node metastasis were characterized. We determined the density and the reverse transcriptase (RT) activity of viral particles.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether a humoral immune response to MERV proteins occurs in melanoma. Candidate B-cell epitopes on MERV proteins were predicted using bioinformatic screening.

We also demonstrate expression of the pol gene and of Gag, Env, and Rec proteins in human melanomas and metastases but not in melanocytes or normal lymph nodes. The data suggest that expression of retroviral genes and production of retroviral particles is activated during development of melanoma.
