Predictive Value of V̇O in Adult Congenital Heart Disease in Comparison with Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction.

Background: Peak oxygen consumption (V̇O ) is used to predict outcomes and the timing of transplantation in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF); V̇O also has predictive utility in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). However, the predictive value of a given V̇O in patients with ACHD compared to those with HFrEF, especially after adjustment for age and sex, is not clear.

Methods: To address this, we performed a longitudinal cohort study comparing patients with ACHD to patients with HFrEF.

Translation, transcultural adaptation, and validation of PedsQL 3.0 Sickle Cell Disease Module into Brazilian Portuguese.

Introduction: Despite the high prevalence of sickle cell disease (SCD) in Brazil, no studies have described the validation of an SCD-specific health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) instrument in children. We validated PedsQL 3.0 Sickle Cell Disease Module (PedsQL-SCD) for Brazilian Portuguese, and cross-validated it with PedsQL 4.

Development of an Internet-based system to guide and telemonitor hearing aid users.

Purpose: To develop and verify the usability of an internet-based system for telemonitoring and guidance of the hearing aid user as well as monitoring the long-term performance in a pilot group.

Methods: The system "I can hear, but I can't understand" was developed based on recommendations in the literature regarding layout, design, and content for guidance and advice. Three stages were followed: planning, design and content development, and pilot testing.

Comparative evaluation of mutagenic effects of two cone-beam computed tomography in oral mucosa cells.

Background: This pilot study aimed to evaluate the mutagenic effects in cells of the oral mucosa after exposure to two different cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Methods: Eighteen adults were submitted to the different CBCT (Carestream CS8100 3D and I-CAT). The cells were collected immediately before the CBCT exposure and 10 days later, when the material was placed on a slide and stained using the Feulgen/Fast Green technique.

Treatment patterns and outcomes for Hodgkin Lymphoma patients aged 60 and older: a report from the Brazilian Prospective Hodgkin Lymphoma Registry.

The treatment of older patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) remains a challenge. We sought to identify the treatment patterns and outcomes in older HL patients included in the Brazilian HL registry (NCT02589548). A total of 136 patients with HIV-negative classic HL, aged ≥ 60 years, diagnosed between 2009 and 2018, were analyzed.

Perceptions of Gender Stereotypes among Women Residents in Surgical and Nonsurgical Specialties.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether and to what degree residents experience stereotype perception by gender and specialty type (surgical vs nonsurgical).

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was sent to resident physicians across all specialties at a single academic institution in February 2021. The survey items asked whether participants believe residents, faculty, and the public expect men or women to be better physicians on a numerical scale from 1 to 7.

Self-Perception of Hearing Difficulties and Quality of Life in Individuals with Hearing Loss.

Objectives: To characterize the results of the Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36), Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB), and the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) questionnaires in individuals with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss and compare them with brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs).

Methods: There were 26 individuals with mild to moderate bilateral symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss who participated in the study. They were aged between 13 and 59 years old, right-hand preference, of both sexes, and were assigned to one of two groups according to the result of a BAEP test: normal ( = 16) or altered ( = 10).

Therapist-oriented home rehabilitation for adults with sickle cell anemia: effects on muscle strength, functional capacity, and quality of life.

Objectives: Considering the advances in functional rehabilitation in recent decades, therapist-oriented home rehabilitation (TOHR) has been increasingly used in the field of physical therapy because it increases patient compliance and reduces health system costs. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of TOHR on functional capacity, muscle strength, and quality of life (QoL) in adults with sickle cell anemia (SCA).

Methods: Forty adults with SCA underwent manually guided TOHR for 12 weeks.

In this survey study, we examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dual-physician families and described gendered differences related to the impact of the pandemic.

Introduction: Constitutional symptoms and thrombohemorrhagic events are common in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Hence, the treatment's primary goal is to control symptoms and improve the quality of life (QoL). In order to assess response to therapy, symptom burden, and QoL among patients with MPN, the "Myeloproliferative Neoplasm Symptom Assessment Form - Total Symptom Score (MPN-SAF TSS)" questionnaire was developed in the USA in 2012.

Death and Myocardial Infarction Following Initial Revascularization Versus Optimal Medical Therapy in Chronic Coronary Syndromes With Myocardial Ischemia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Contemporary Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background In chronic coronary syndromes, myocardial ischemia is associated with a greater risk of death and nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI). We sought to compare the effect of initial revascularization with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) plus optimal medical therapy (OMT) with OMT alone in patients with chronic coronary syndrome and myocardial ischemia on long-term death and nonfatal MI. Methods and Results Ovid Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for randomized controlled trials of PCI or CABG plus OMT versus OMT alone for patients with chronic coronary syndromes.

Genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of mobile phone use on the oral epithelium: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

The use of mobile phones is based on radiofrequency (RF) waves, and the devices act as transmitters and receivers of non-ionizing energy. The micronucleus test was developed to identify increases in the occurrence of mutations in cells exposed to various agents. This systematic review with meta-analysis adhered to the following protocol: defining the objective, outlining the search method (PICO model), conducting the search, identifying literature, selecting articles, and extracting data.

Diaphragm ultrasonography in adults with sickle cell anemia: evaluation of morphological and functional aspects.

Objectives: To assess morphological and functional aspects of the diaphragm by ultrasonography (US) in adults with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and evaluate if the diaphragmatic musculature can play a role in changes found in pulmonary function tests (PFTs) of these patients.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational and single-center study involving 40 adults with SCA who underwent diaphragm US and PFTs with a maximum of 1 month between the two tests. Diaphragm US was performed in B and M modes, and echogenicity, thickness and movement of the muscle was assessed in different respiratory maneuvers.

Intraoperative Awareness With Recall: A Descriptive, Survey-Based, Cohort Study.

Background: Unintended intraoperative awareness with recall (AWR) is a potential complication of general anesthesia. Patients typically report recollections of (1) hearing sounds or conversations, (2) being unable to breathe or move, (3), feeling pain, and/or (4) experiencing emotional distress. The purpose of the current study was to identify and further characterize AWR experiences identified through postoperative surveys of a large unselected adult surgical cohort.

Introduction: Patients with sickle cell disease have increased left ventricular size, which is not usually accompanied by changes in systolic function indexes. We assessed echocardiographic abnormalities present in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and compared echocardiographic parameters to other sickle cell diseases (OSCD).

Material And Methods: A blind cross-sectional study with 60 patients with SCA and 16 patients with OSCD who underwent transthoracic echocardiography was performed.

Data about Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) in developing countries are scarce and suggest the existence of substantial disparities in healthcare and outcomes in large areas of the world. In 2009, a prospective registry of HL was implemented in Brazil. Web-based data were contributed by 20 institutions across the country participating in the Brazilian Prospective Hodgkin's Lymphoma Registry.

Protector effect of α-thalassaemia on cholecystitis and cholecystectomy in sickle cell disease.

Objectives: Cholecystitis is one of the complications of symptomatic cholelithiasis responsible for high levels of morbidity of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Here, we investigated the possible protective role of single gene deletions of α-thalassaemia in the occurrence of cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in SCD patients, as well as the cholecystectomy requirements.

Methods: The α-globin genotype was determined in 83 SCD patients using the multiplex-polymerase chain reaction and compared with clinical events.

Background: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is characterized by a broad spectrum of abnormalities that affect most body organs and systems. To date, there is few data on the influence of these patients' clinical characteristics on the functional exercise capacity.

Objective: To describe and quantify the main changes seen on computed tomography of the chest in mildly symptomatic adult patients with sickle cell disease, as well as to evaluate the radiologist accuracy in determining the type of hemoglobinopathy.

Materials And Methods: A prospective study involving 44 adult patients with sickle cell disease who underwent inspiration and expiration computed tomography of the chest. The frequency of tomography findings and the extent of involvement are reported.

Expression of Ki-67 and P16 INK4a in chemically-induced perioral squamous cell carcinomas in mice.

Objective: to evaluate the influence of Ki-67 and P16INK4a proteins immunohistochemical expressions on the clinical and morphological parameters of perioral squamous cell carcinoma induced with 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene (DMBA) in mice.

Methods: we topically induced the lesions in the oral commissure of ten Swiss mice for 20 weeks, determining the time to tumors onset and the average tumor volume up to 26 weeks. In histopathological analysis, the variables studied were histological malignancy grade and the immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 and P16INK4a proteins.
