Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on understanding the knowledge and attitudes of Italian implantologists towards retrograde peri-implantitis (RPI), a rare condition with unclear causes and limited research.
  • A survey was distributed to 475 randomly selected implantologists, assessing demographics and specific questions about RPI's origins, symptoms, and treatments, with a significant emphasis on analyzing the relationship between correct answers and the respondents' experience.
  • Results revealed that less experienced implantologists struggled with identifying RPI correctly and its management options, highlighting a gap in knowledge despite some familiarity with its symptoms and potential causes.

Background: Recent articles have hypothesized a possible correlation between dental implants dissolution products and peri-implantitis. The null hypothesis tested in this case-control study was that there would be no differences in salivary concentrations of titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), nickel (Ni) and arsenic (As) ions among patients with dental implants, healthy (Group A) or affected by peri-implantitis (Group B), compared to subjects without implants and/or metallic prosthetic restorations (Group C).

Methods: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to analyze saliva samples.
