Neurological complications of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in children.

Object: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a potentially life-saving treatment for patients in refractory cardiorespiratory failure. Neurological complications that result from ECMO treatment are known to significantly impact patient survival and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to review the incidence of neurological complications of ECMO in the pediatric population and the role of neurosurgery in the treatment of these patients.

Burn injury and wound healing in X-linked ichthyosis.

X-linked ichthyosis is a skin condition of decreased keratin degradation and hyperkeratosis resulting from a deficiency of steroid sulfatase causing scaly skin. Burns in these patients may require skin grafting and harvesting from diseased donor sites. No descriptions of the outcomes of attempted grafting, donor site healing, and burn recovery in patients with X-linked ichthyosis exist.

A multidisciplinary approach to improving women's health in semi-urban Ecuador.

Objective: To examine women's reasons for seeking care at The Quito Project (TQP), a student-led organization that aims to improve the health, education, and well-being of a semi-urban community in Quito, Ecuador, and to explore the need for additional preventative interventions.

Methods: An oral survey was administered to 86 adult patients in 2008. We also completed a chart review to evaluate patient demographics and medical conditions.

Fatalities associated with the termination of electrical services.

The worldwide dependence on electricity to support the needs of today's society is often taken for granted and, as such, the hazards associated with the termination of electrical services are often neglected. Whether electrical services are unintentionally terminated as the result of severe weather or intentionally terminated as the result of nonpayment of utility bills, the ensuing conditions may lead to injury or death in affected individuals. We performed a retrospective review of all deaths investigated by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office between 1999 and 2004.
