Introduction: Equine-assisted services (EAS) has received attention as a potential treatment strategy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as existing literature indicates that symptoms may decrease following EAS. Relatively little is known about the mechanisms at play during lessons and if physiological measures are impacted. The objectives of this pilot study were to 1) explore the effects of adaptive horsemanship (AH) lessons on symptoms of PTSD, hormone concentrations, and social motor synchrony; 2) determine if physiological changes occur as veterans interact with horses; and 3) explore if the interaction between veteran and horse changes over the 8-week session.

Objective: The artificial urethral sphincter (AUS) is the gold standard treatment for male stress urinary incontinence which commonly results from prostatectomy or pelvic radiation for prostate cancer. Patients with prior pelvic radiation history experience increased risk of developing urethral erosion. Transcorporal AUS (TAUS) placement can be used as an alternative for compromised urethras to incorporate a small portion of the corporal bodies for additional support.

Objective: To determine the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic-related changes and program-specific characteristics on the geographic diversity of the 2021 and 2022 urology match classes.

Methods: We gathered publicly available information to compare match outcomes in 2021 and 2022 to the previous 5 application cycles (2016-2020). Variables included residency program class size, program and resident AUA section, and program and resident medical school.

3D printing is a growing tool in surgical education to visualize and teach complex procedures. Previous studies demonstrating the usefulness of 3D models as teaching tools for partial nephrectomy used highly detailed models costing between $250 and 1000. We aimed to create thorough, inexpensive 3D models to accelerate learning for trainees and increase health literacy in patients.

According to the Joint Commission every patient has a right to pain management. Due to multimodal pain management, pain orders have the potential for duplication as well as gaps in therapy. At our institution, we evaluated pain orders and implemented strategies that aimed to reduce those gaps.

Purpose: Current literature surrounding management of patients with reported β-lactam allergies focuses on allergy delabeling. Standard clinical decision support tools have not been optimized to be compatible with the currently accepted cross-reaction rate of 1% to 2%. This potentially promotes use of non-β-lactam antibiotics, which are often not first-line therapy and may carry increased risks.

3D printing has been growing in many surgical fields including Urology. The primary use has been to print kidneys with tumors to better understand anatomy and to assist with surgical planning and education. Previous studies that utilized 3D printing of kidneys for partial nephrectomies have been limited by the cost and complexity of model creation, rendering them highly impractical to be used on a routine basis.

Article Synopsis
  • Nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) is a serious condition where fluid accumulates in a fetus due to various genetic and non-genetic causes, and the study aimed to improve diagnostic outcomes using prenatal exome sequencing after standard tests returned negative results.
  • Researchers in the HYDROPS study performed exome sequencing on fetal samples and parental blood, finding that 50% of the cases yielded diagnostic results, while about 22.7% had possible diagnoses.
  • The study concluded that exome sequencing is a valuable tool in identifying the causes of NIHF, which can inform prognosis and future pregnancy risks, highlighting its importance in clinical practices after standard evaluations.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrops fetalis (HF) is a serious condition where fluid builds up in a fetus, often linked to genetic disorders, yet genetic testing usually focuses on a limited number of genes.* -
  • A comprehensive literature review identified 131 genes with strong links to nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF), as well as 46 emerging genes related to various disorders, highlighting the diagnostic gap in current testing.* -
  • The study suggests that many significant genes associated with NIHF may be missed by existing sequencing techniques, indicating a need for broader genetic testing methods, like exome sequencing, to improve clinical diagnosis and treatment.*

Circulating concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, an inflammatory biomarker widely assessed in humans to study the inflammatory response to acute psychological stress, have for decades been quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). However, biobehavioral researchers are increasingly using cytokine multiplex assays instead of ELISA to measure IL-6 and other cytokines. Despite this trend, multiplex assays have not been directly compared to ELISA for their ability to detect subtle stress-induced changes of IL-6.

Background: Accurate history collection is integral to medication reconciliation. Studies support pharmacy involvement in the process, but assessment of global time spent is limited. The authors hypothesized the location of a medication-focused interview would impact time spent.

Background: Investigators report endotracheal tube misplacement in up to 40% of emergent intubations. The standard elements of confirmation have significant limitations. Diaphragmatic ultrasound is a potentially viable addition to the confirmatory process.

Objective: To report 2 cases of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa meningitis and ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VPS) infection successfully sterilized with intrathecal colistin 10 mg/day after development of nephrotoxicity associated with intravenous administration.

Case Summaries: Case 1. A 69-year-old African American woman with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage and hydrocephalus requiring VPS placement was admitted with VPS infection and meningitis.
