Limited data on allergic diseases in high-altitude urban areas of Latin America led to a study in Cuenca, Ecuador, focusing on preschool children aged 3-5 years.
The study found that 18% suffered from asthma, 48% from rhinitis, and 28% from eczema, with atopy present in 33% of the children, and various risk factors associated with these conditions.
Key findings indicated that parental history of allergies significantly increased risks for conditions like asthma and eczema, while attending daycare appeared to lower the risk of rhinitis.
