Socio-demographic, behavioral, functional and anthropometric data for groups of elderly Quechua Indians of Peru were used to investigate the effects of gender and lifestyle patterns on nutritional status. Two community-dwelling samples were selected for study, representative of divergent lifestyles in terms of their combination of socio-economic, demographic and cultural contexts, plus an ad-hoc sample of institutionalized individuals with controlled food intake and reduced physical activity. Assessing competence: the European Survey on Aging Protocol (ESAP).

Objectives: The main goal of this research project was to translate and adapt the European Survey on Ageing Protocol (ESAP) to 7 European countries/cultures. This article presents preliminary results from the ESAP, the basic assessment instrument of EXCELSA (European Longitudinal Study of Aging).

Methods: 672 individuals aged 30-85, selected through quota sampling (by age, gender, education and living conditions), participated in this study, with 96 subjects from each of the 7 European countries.

Exploratory study on classification and individualisation of earprints.

The FearID research project is aimed at the individualisation of earprints for the purpose of forensic research. The study presented here was carried out within the framework of this project. It intends to combine a review of what is known from literature on the classification and individualisation of earprints with results from a preliminary study of earprints.

Age-related changes in root transparency of teeth in males and females.

The correlation between root transparency and chronological age was examined in a sample of 366 intact teeth from 295 individuals of known sex and age. Correlations, especially for anterior teeth (incisors and canines), were slightly higher in females than males, but neither the slopes nor the Y intercepts of the regression lines were significantly different.
