Article Synopsis
  • - An 81-year-old man was found to have a well-defined cyst in his jaw during a routine x-ray, which was thought to be a residual cyst and was surgically removed for analysis.
  • - The analysis revealed that the cyst was mostly lined with a type of tissue associated with tooth development, showing unique features like ghost cells, along with other cystic structures.
  • - The final diagnosis was a calcifying odontogenic cyst containing areas similar to an odontogenic keratocyst, a rare combination, with no signs of recurrence after 9 years of monitoring.

Objectives: To investigate the performance of radiographic systems with automatic exposure compensation (AEC) on the caries diagnosis in images acquired with different exposure parameters and in the presence of high-density material. Also, the image quality was assessed.

Methods: Forty posterior teeth (80 proximal surfaces) were radiographed using a phosphor plate and a CMOS system.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and knowledge and perception about smoking cessation counseling among dental students in Brazil. A cross-sectional study was performed at the School of Dentistry, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil. The Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) research instrument was used.

Purpose: Sufficient area in the interforaminal region is required for dental implant placement, and the anterior loop of the mandibular canal is located within the limits of this area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and extent of the anterior loop in a Brazilian sample population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Materials And Methods: CBCT images from 250 patients (500 hemimandibles) obtained for various clinical indications were randomly selected and evaluated to determine the presence and length of the anterior loop.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of an adapted FSS system for using frontal and lateral cephalometric radiographs of the frontal sinus in human identification.
  • Eighty digital cephalometric radiographs were analyzed by two examiners independently to evaluate reproducibility, using a lightbox and specific tools for drawing outlines of the frontal sinus.
  • Results showed strong agreement for both intraexaminer and interexaminer assessments, confirming that this method is reliable for human identification.

The purpose of this study was to test the usefulness of some morphometric parameters of the teeth in 5 different age groups through images of Cone Beam CT. 118 upper central incisors clinically acquired of 60 women and 58 men aged between 22 and 70 years were selected. The hard tissue volume and the pulp cavity volume of each tooth was obtained and computed by the software DentalSlice(®) and the measures were assessed (pulp cavity volume, hard tissue volume, tooth volume and pulp cavity/tooth volume ratio).

Osteoblastoma is a benign neoplasia and is uncommon in the jaws. In some cases, this lesion presents extremely aggressive local characteristics and is termed aggressive osteoblastoma. Because the clinical, radiographic and histopathologic characteristics are similar to those of a variety of benign and malignant tumors, it poses a diagnostic dilemma.

This study compared the radiographic image quality of 2 photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plate systems with a radiographic system against a complementary metal oxide silicon (CMOS) system. Using the 3 digital systems, 160 approximal surfaces were radiographed under standardized conditions. Using a 5-point scale, 6 observers scored the resulting images for the presence of caries.

The aim of this study was to compare detection of non-cavitated approximal caries lesions in images from seven solid-state intraoral digital receptors, with particular focus on two task-specific enhancement filters. One hundred and sixty approximal non-cavitated surfaces were radiographed under standardized conditions using the following seven intraoral solid-state digital receptors: two CMOS systems, Schick CDR-APS, and Kodak RVGui; and five CCD systems: Visualix, VistaRay, Dixi2, Sidexis, and Dr. Suni Plus.

Background: The authors conducted a study to compare the accuracy of an older and newer version of two intraoral digital systems in terms of radiographic detection of proximal carious lesions.

Methods: Under in vitro and standardized conditions, the authors obtained radiographs of 160 noncavitated proximal surfaces using the Digora FMX (Soredex, Tuusula, Finland), the Digora Optime, the Schick CDR (Schick Technologies, Long Island City, N.Y.
