BACKGROUND Chagas disease, resulting from Trypanosoma cruzi infections, continues to be a health concern mainly in Latin American countries where the parasite is endemic. The laboratory diagnosis of a chronic infection is determined through serological assays for antibodies against T. cruzi and several tests are available that differ in key components, formats and methodologies.

Oncologic outcome and voice quality may support the choice for the latter To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare oncologic and functional outcomes of TOS and RT as treatment options for Tis/T1a glottic cancer. Literature research on online databases was carried out.

International recommendations on systems of quality management classify as a top component the inclusion of two types of control: (a) internal quality control (IQC) and (b) external quality control (EQC). In EQC it is essential to have, at least, a monthly frequency of laboratory assessment.

Objective: To evaluate the delay from the patient's initial symptoms to the definitive treatment.
Background: The role of pectoralis major muscle flap (PMMF) in reducing the rate of pharyngocutaneous fistula after salvage total laryngectomy has not been clearly established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of PMMF in reducing pharyngocutaneous fistula rates after total laryngectomy.
Methods: The analyzed intervention was the use of a PMMF after total laryngectomy.
Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are rare benign soft-tissue tumoral lesions resembling fetal adipose tissue. A total of 16 cases of lipoblastoma of the neck were reported in the literature, and only 3 were described in the posterior side of the neck. Hibernoma is a rare benign adipose tumor composed of brown fat cells and only about ten cases occurring in the cervical area have been reported.

Objective: To establish the proportion of cases among patients with TH and CPT, correlating it with histomorphological aspects.
Method: A retrospective study of patients undergoing partial or total thyroidectomy for PTC between 2007 and 2009, a total of 41 cases.
Unlabelled: Incidental parathyroidectomy is a common event in thyroid surgery. The literature shows a finding of parathyroid glands ranging from 6.4% to 31% in pathological specimens of the thyroid gland.

Oncocytic tumors of the endocrine system are a group of rare entities described in several organs, including the thyroid gland. Medullary carcinoma can seldom show the predominance of cells with oncocytic changes but the positive immunostaining for calcitonin should be helpful for the correct diagnosis. We describe the case of a 71 year-old female Caucasian patient, with a hard 5 cm thyroid nodule for 2 months.

The ectopic gland locations should be known for appropriate surgical exploration and for avoiding subsequent re-exploration that would represent higher morbidity. Multiple ectopic glands are rare and present a particular challenge in parathyroid surgery.

Experienced thyroid surgeons are often able to identify the parathyroid glands, but sometimes it is difficult to differentiate them from other contiguous tissues. Contact endoscopy was introduced in otolaryngology for the characterization of normal and pathological epithelia. Our objective was to analyze contact endoscopy as an auxiliary method for identification of the parathyroid glands during thyroid surgery.
