Background: Lower limb loss is a highly disabling medical condition that can severely impact a person's quality of life. Recovery becomes especially challenging if an amputee has a short residual limb, which can complicate proper prosthetic fitting, causing discomfort, difficulties in suspension, and reduced mobility. Current limb lengthening techniques such as the Ilizarov apparatus and external fixators are cumbersome, uncomfortable, and have high complication rates.

Methods: We highlighted 4 surface landmarks in 20 adult cadaveric hands: the radial border of the index finger, the ulnar border of the thumb, the thumb interphalangeal joint flexion creases, and the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint creases. We injected the radial arteries with red latex and dissected the thumbs.

It is recognized that ketone bodies, such as R-beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-HB) and acetoacetate, are energy sources for the brain. As with glucose metabolism, monocarboxylate uptake by the brain is dependent on the function and regulation of its own transporter system. We concurrently investigated ketone body influx, blood flow, and regulation of monocarboxylate transporter (MCT-1) and glucose transporter (GLUT-1) in diet-induced ketotic (KG) rat brain.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe propensity of uveal melanoma cells for invasion and metastasis is critical factor for the clinical outcome of this form of cancer, and the essential biology of its aggressiveness is not completely understood. In the present study we investigated the involvement of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) in uveal melanoma migration, invasion and adhesion, the hallmarks of aggressive behavior of cancer cells. We demonstrate that exposure to hypoxia increased migration, invasion and adhesion of uveal melanoma cells in in vitro assays.
