Surgical site infection is the leading healthcare-associated infection and a major contributor to rising healthcare costs. Implementation of measures to reduce this problem, particularly the prophylactic use of negative pressure wound therapy, may be an effective and promising method to reduce the risk of surgical site infection in patients with closed surgical wounds. The aim of the study was to identify the effectiveness of negative pressure wound therapy as a prophylactic measure in reducing the risk of surgical site infection in patients with a closed surgical wound.

Introduction: Despite advancements in implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) technology, sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains a persistent public health concern. Chagas disease (ChD), prevalent in Brazil, is associated with increased ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) events and SCD compared to other cardiomyopathies.

Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients who received ICDs between October 2007 and December 2018.

Background: Catheter ablation (CA) is a well-established therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF); however, there is paucity of data for elderly patients. We aimed to assess long-term efficacy and safety of CA for elderly patients with AF.

Methods: Medline, BVS, Cochrane, and Embase were searched through April 2023 to investigate comparative outcomes between elderly patients > 75 or 80 years, as per-study cutoff, and individuals ≤ 75/80 years, undergoing CA.

Soil conditioner is class of products used to enhance physics, physicochemical or soil biological activities, being able to recover disturbed or nutritional unbalanced soils. The formulation of a soil conditioner composed by bauxite residue (BR), and organic oil palm wastes, as raw materials, was recently proposed as an innovative strategy for the Brazilian acid soils amendment. Here we show the results of soil conditioner amended soil leaching tests and agronomical performance.

A previously healthy 13 year-old boy presented with acute-onset headaches, aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis. Imaging showed cerebral ischemic infarction due to bilateral carotid occlusion, and investigation for stroke etiology diagnosed homocystinuria. Homocystinuria is an autosomal recessive condition that affects the metabolism of the amino acid methionine due to an enzyme deficiency.

Bauxite residue (BR) is a by-product of Bayer process, which is applied for alumina production. Due to its inherent alkalinity and sodicity, the use of BR is globally limited to 23% of the 150 million tons (Mt) produced annually. Maximizing alternative and large-scale uses of BR is a game changer to promote the sustainability of the aluminum production chain.

Objective: To evaluate the cognitive and academic profile of preterm newborns at school age and to determine the factors related to prematurity and sociodemographic profile that influence these results.

Methods: Patients aged 6-14 years old that were assisted in the preterm follow-up clinic were recruited. The cognitive, academic, and neurological capacities were accessed through a detailed evaluation with a child neurologist, a neuropsychologist and a psychopedagogue.

Background The usual approach to epicardial access in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy and megacolon is surgical access to avoid bowel injury. However, there are concerns regarding its safety in cases of Chagas cardiomyopathy with reports of prolonged mechanical ventilation and high mortality in this clinical setting. The aim of this study was to examine feasibility and complication rates for ventricular tachycardia ablation performed with laparoscopic-guided epicardial access.

Introduction: Catheter ablation of the parahisian accessory pathways (PHAP) has been established as the definitive therapy for this type of arrhythmia. However, the PHAP proximity to the normal atrioventricular conduction system makes the procedure technically challenging. Here, we have reported a case series of 20 patients with PHAP who underwent aortic access ablation to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this approach in the PHAP ablation.

Background: In patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy (ChCM), sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the leading cause of mortality. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a well-established therapy for secondary prevention in patients with structural heart disease, but there are conflicting opinions regarding its efficacy and safety in patients with ChCM. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of the ICD for secondary prevention in patients with ChCM, comparing mortality as the primary outcome of patients treated with ICD with those treated with amiodarone.

Background: Sudden cardiac death is the most frequent death mechanism in Chagas disease, responsible for 55% to 65% of the deaths of patients with chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC). The most often involved electrophysiological mechanisms are ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) has a beneficial role in preventing sudden death due to malignant ventricular arrhythmias, and, thus the correct identification of patients at risk is required.

This study aimed to evaluate bone repair in rat dental sockets after implanting nanostructured carbonated hydroxyapatite/sodium alginate (CHA) and nanostructured carbonated hydroxyapatite/sodium alginate containing 5% strontium microspheres (SrCHA) as bone substitute materials. Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into two experimental groups: CHA and SrCHA (n=5/period/group). After one and 6 weeks of extraction of the right maxillary central incisor and biomaterial implantation, 5 μm bone blocks were obtained for histomorphometric evaluation.

Background: Sudden death is one of the characteristics of Chagas disease (ChD). With the development of strategies for the prevention of malignant arrhythmias, especially with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), there is interest in developing strategies to predict sudden cardiac death. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that global longitudinal strain (GLS) and mechanical dispersion (MD) may be associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias in patients with ChD.

Sudden death is one of the most characteristic phenomena of Chagas disease, and approximately one-third of infected patients develop life-threatening heart disease, including malignant ventricular arrhythmias. Fibrotic lesions secondary to chronic cardiomyopathy produce arrhythmogenic substrates that lead to the appearance and maintenance of ventricular arrhythmias. The objective of this study is to discuss the main clinical and epidemiological aspects of ventricular arrhythmias in Chagas disease, the specific workups and treatments for these abnormalities, and the breakthroughs needed to determine a more effective approach to these arrhythmias.

Chagas disease continues to be an important cause of cardiac disease in many countries of Latin America. Dilated cardiomyopathy constitutes the more severe manifestation and main cause of death in the disease. Typical clinical presentations include three basic syndromes: heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and thromboembolism.
