Different degrees in the biological activities of Canavalia rosea had been previously reported . In this study, our group assessed the cardioprotective effects of the ethyl acetate fraction (EAcF) of the Canavalia rosea leaves. Firstly, it was confirmed, by in vitro approach, that the EAcF has high antioxidant properties due to the presence of important secondary metabolites, as flavonoids.

Based on this, a series of chalcone derivatives bearing methyl, phenyl or furanyl substituents at different positions of A and B rings were synthesised, characterised, and evaluated regarding antiprotozoal activity. Molecules were synthesised via base catalyzed Claisen-Schmidt condensation and characterised by IR and NMR spectral data.

Five chalcone-based molecules denominated by C-3 ((E)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one), C-4 ((E)-1,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one), C-5 ((E)-1-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one), C-6 ((E)-3-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one) and C-7 ((E)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(naphthalen-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-one) were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt reaction in solution of NaOH in water/ethanol 2:1. The aldehydes used were benzaldehyde, anisaldehyde, and β-naphthaldehyde, while the used ketones were acetophenone, p-methoxyacetophenone, and 3,4-methylenedioxyacetophenone. Z-scan and hyper-Rayleigh scattering techniques were used to study the nonlinear optical properties of these compounds in dichloromethane medium.

Although some prospective studies have shown that many successful young athletes do not maintain the same level of success when they reach adulthood, there is still a lack of information regarding athletes who started their international involvement at early ages. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the international pathway of male and female athletes in different sports from the moment of their competitive debut, in order to determine how many international athletes at early ages competed or did not compete internationally as juniors and/or seniors. The sample included 395 athletes (soccer, volleyball, swimming and judo), born between 1974 and 1981, who could have competed in their national squads between 1988 and 2008.
