Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, significant causes of infectious disease-related deaths, are treatable but face challenges like patient non-compliance and drug-resistant strains.
  • Current treatment options lack highly effective vaccines, requiring alternative approaches to address these challenges.
  • Host-directed therapies (HDTs) could complement existing treatments by targeting biological processes that influence infection, aiming to enhance drug effectiveness and reduce inflammation-related side effects.

Irg1 is an enzyme that generates itaconate, a metabolite that plays a key role in the regulation of inflammatory responses. Previous studies have implicated Irg1 as an important mediator in preventing excessive inflammation and tissue damage in () infection. Here, we investigated the pattern recognition receptors and signaling pathways by which triggers Irg1 gene expression by comparing the responses of control and genetically deficient BMDMs.
