Article Synopsis
  • Constitutive laws are fundamental equations that explain physical processes, but determining these laws in complex materials like heterogeneous solids can be difficult.
  • A new image-learning framework was developed to analyze high-tech microscopy images and accurately understand the relationship between composition and eigenstrain in a battery electrode material, LiFePO.
  • This method successfully visualizes and quantifies factors such as chemical expansion and dislocations in battery materials, providing insights that can enhance performance and longevity of batteries, while showcasing the advantages of combining advanced microscopy with innovative analysis techniques.

The grain structure of an Al-0.3 wt%Mn alloy deformed to 1% strain was reconstructed using diffraction contrast tomography (DCT) and high-energy diffraction microscopy (HEDM). 14 equally spaced HEDM layers were acquired and their exact location within the DCT volume was determined using a generic algorithm minimizing a function of the local disorientations between the two data sets.
