Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the Double-vein Embolization technique used to enhance liver remnant size before major liver surgeries, with a focus on initial experiences at Semmelweis University, Hungary.
  • Over a period of 16 procedures, results showed a 100% technical success rate with minimal complications, and significant increases in future liver remnant volume and function, indicating the technique's effectiveness.
  • While outcomes align with existing literature, the authors emphasize the need for more research to determine how to best incorporate Double-vein Embolization into standard clinical practice.

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a technically challenging angiographic therapy that has been shown to have excellent clinical outcomes for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and lower urinary tract symptoms. Although clinical outcomes have been well documented, several questions remain regarding various technical details of the procedure. This article is a brief review of indications and technical parameters of PAE as well as commonly debated topics throughout the literature.

A 76-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma was referred for liver radioembolization. Given a prior left hemihepatectomy, it was clinically important to consider potentially irradiated healthy liver at planning. Thus, at the SPECT/CT imaging of the scout dose 166 Ho-microparticles before injected superselectively in the right hepatic artery, 99m Tc-mebrofenin was injected intravenously, and functional volumetry SPECT was performed simultaneously.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study analyzed 7 patients with liver-dominant mCRPC treated with TARE, revealing median overall survival rates of 27.2, 32.1, and 108.1 months from different starting points.
  • * The study found no serious side effects and concluded that TARE appears to be a safe and effective treatment option for this specific group of patients.

Situs inversus totalis is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by a mirror-image transposition of both the abdominal and the thoracic organs. While this anomaly is known since the ancient times, practicing doctors do not have much experience with it. Laterality is established early in development, and any failure in that process might lead to a wide variety of disorders which may be partial or complete.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of transarterial hepatic radioembolization (TARE) using yttrium-90 in women with breast cancer that has spread primarily to the liver and has not responded to chemotherapy.
  • A total of 31 female patients were retrospectively reviewed; TARE resulted in a median overall survival of 13 months, with 60.1% of patients surviving at 1 year and 24.5% at 3 years, and side effects were minimal.
  • Patients with estrogen receptor-positive tumors and those with bone-only metastases had significantly better survival outcomes, indicating TARE could be a valuable option for specific patient groups.

Pancreatic cancer is a challenging malignancy with limited treatment options and poor life expectancy. The only curative option is surgical resection, but only 15%-20% of patients are resectable at presentation because more than 50% of patients has distant metastasis at diagnosis and the rest of them has locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC). The standard of care first line treatment for LAPC patients is chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) for patients with liver-dominant metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC), revealing promising outcomes.
  • A total of 36 patients underwent TARE treatments, resulting in a median overall survival of 19.3 months and a high objective response rate of 89%.
  • The findings suggest that TARE is a viable option for improving survival in RCC patients with liver metastases, and certain factors like treatment response and liver function can indicate better survival rates.

Introduction: Following renal transplantation, the incidence of malignancies is 3-5 times higher than that of healthy individuals. Among other type of cancers, the risk of urological tumors is also elevated. However, only a few cases of de novo transitional cell carcinomas occurring in renal allografts have been reported.
