Bacteroides fragilis is the anaerobe most frequently isolated from clinical specimens and piperacillin/tazobactam is among the drugs that can be used to treat polymicrobial infections in which this bacteria is often involved. During antibiotic therapy, inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics are always followed by subinhibitory concentrations which can generate phenotypic changes in bacteria. So, in this study we aimed to evaluate changes in the proteomic profile of B.

Background: The eco-epidemiological complexity of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) has made it difficult to devise an efficient strategy for management of the disease, and development of an effective vaccine remains the most promising approach. The objective of the study was to determine the reduction in incidence of ACL following intramuscular administration of two doses of a killed Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis vaccine.

Methods: A cluster randomised trial was conducted from 2002 to 2011 in 108 localities in an endemic area of southeast Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Hereditary angioedema is a genetic condition that leads to unpredictable and severe swelling, impacting patients' quality of life significantly.
  • A study in Brazil evaluated the quality of life of patients using the SF-36 questionnaire, revealing that over 90% scored below 70, indicating poor quality of life, particularly in vitality and social aspects.
  • The findings suggest a need for specialized assessment tools to better understand and evaluate the specific impacts of hereditary angioedema on quality of life, beyond what generic questionnaires like SF-36 can provide.

Two classes of antiviral drugs are licensed in Europe for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza; the M2 ion-channel blockers amantadine and rimantadine acting against type A influenza viruses only and the neuraminidase enzyme inhibitors zanamivir and oseltamivir acting against type A and type B influenza viruses. This guidance document was developed for but not limited to the European Union (EU) and other European Economic Area (EEA) countries on how and when to test for influenza virus antiviral drug susceptibility. It is aimed at clinical and influenza surveillance laboratories carrying out antiviral drug susceptibility testing on influenza viruses from patients suspected of harbouring viruses with reduced susceptibility or for the monitoring of the emergence of such among circulating viruses, respectively.

Nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) drugs are a major component of highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). NRTI combinations have been demonstrated as producing a sustained reduction in plasma viremia with an increased CD4 count, thereby showing clear clinical benefits. Therefore, the secondary effects caused by the combination of two NRTIs, mainly those related to amplification of genotoxic effects, due to increased risk of DNA damage caused by these drugs, should be carefully examined.

Visceral leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi, is a chronic parasitic disease of humans and dogs. Confirmation of the protozoal agent in bone marrow, lymph node or spleen aspirate is diagnostic, while specific-IgG serology is used mainly for epidemiology despite the general presence of high levels of serum immunoglobulin. Anecdotal reports of false-negative serology in active disease cases are known and are ascribed to the formation of immune complexes.

Introduction And Objectives: To investigate the relationship between inflammatory and apoptotic parameters and the severity and extent of target organ damage in patients with essential hypertension.

Methods: We studied 159 consecutive patients with treated essential hypertension. An exhaustive evaluation of damage to heart, kidney, and blood vessels was performed and plasma levels of inflammatory (interleukin 6 and soluble receptor of tumor necrosis factor-alpha type 2) and apoptotic markers (soluble receptor of tumor necrosis factor-alpha type 1 and soluble Fas receptor) were determined.

Trichoepithelioma is a benign neoplasm that shares both clinical and histological features with basal cell carcinoma. It is important to distinguish these neoplasms because they require different clinical behavior and therapeutic planning. Many studies have addressed the use of immunohistochemistry to improve the differential diagnosis of these tumors.

The simultaneous treatment with the cross-linking agent cisplatin, the radiomimetic antitumoral drug bleomycin, and the anti-metabolite drug 5-fluorouracil has been used as a regimen to treat patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Considering that these drugs interact directly with DNA, one of the important late-occurring complications from treatment of primary malignancies is the therapy-related secondary cancers as a result of the genotoxic activity of the drugs on normal cells. In this sense, the genotoxicity of this combination was evaluated using the wing somatic mutation and recombination test in Drosophila melanogaster.

Background And Objective: The guidelines for arterial hypertension recommend a systematic determination of ankle-brachial index (ABI) in the initial risk stratification in hypertensive patients, while not indicating whether controls should be evolutionary. Our aim was to analyze the evolution of the ABI value in hypertensive patients in terms of control of blood pressure (BP) after one year follow-up.

Patients And Methods: We included 209 hypertensive patients, in whom ABI was determined at baseline and after one year of antihypertensive treatment.

The diversity of specific bacteria taxa, such as the actinomycetes, has not been reported from the Antarctic island of Barrientos. The diversity of actinomycetes was estimated with two different strategies that use PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. First, a PCR was applied, using a group-specific primer that allows selective amplification of actinomycete sequences.

Prevotella intermedia is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium found in human indigenous microbiota that plays an important role in opportunistic infections. The successful colonization depends on the ability of anaerobes to respond to oxidative stress (OS) in oxygenated tissues as well as to resist oxidative events from the host immune system until anaerobic conditions are present at the infection site. As knowledge of the mechanisms of protection against OS in Prevotella is limited, studies are needed to clarify aspects of molecular biology, physiology and ecology of this bacterium.

Fluoroquinolones are widely used in human and in veterinary medicine due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. They act by inhibiting type II DNA topoisomerases (gyrase and topoisomerase IV). Because of the sequence homology between prokaryotic and eukaryotic topoisomerases II, fluoroquinolones can pose a hazard to eukaryotic cells.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common tumor in men over 40 years of age. Acute urinary retention (AUR) is regarded as the most serious hazard of untreated BPH. α-Blockers, such as doxazosin mesylate, and 5-α reductase inhibitors, such as finasteride, are frequently used because they decrease both AUR and the need for BPH-related surgery.
