Purpose: Flow re-direction endoluminal device (FRED) is a novel dual-layer flow-diverting stent to treat cerebral aneurysms with high obliteration rates, however, it induces inevitable metal-related artifacts. We compared silent magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), a new MRA method using ultra-short time of echo and arterial spin-labeling, with conventional time-of-flight (TOF)-MRA for imaging aneurysms treated using FRED.

Methods: Between May 2020 and September 2022, 16 patients with unruptured internal carotid aneurysms treated using FRED simultaneously underwent silent MRA and TOF-MRA after treatment, with 36 follow-up sessions in total.

Aggressive natural killer cell leukemia (ANKL) is a rare lymphoid neoplasm frequently associated with Epstein-Barr virus, with a disastrously poor prognosis. Owing to the lack of samples from patients with ANKL and relevant murine models, comprehensive investigation of its pathogenesis including the tumor microenvironment (TME) has been hindered. Here we established 3 xenograft mice derived from patients with ANKL (PDXs), which enabled extensive analysis of tumor cells and their TME.

Haloperidol is widely used for antiemetic control in advanced cancer. However, due to its limited administration methods (oral or injection), its management is frequently challenging in palliative home care. Recently, a blonanserin transdermal patch was developed as the first antipsychotic percutaneous agent.

Background/aim: Prognostic factors, including CD8-positive tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (CD8TILs), in definitive radiotherapy (RT) for squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) of the uterine cervix need to be studied. This study aimed to explore these factors in a retrospective cohort.

Patients And Methods: Patients with SqCC who underwent definitive RT comprising external beam RT and intracavitary brachytherapy at our facility between April 2006 and November 2013 were evaluated.

We previously conducted a randomized phase II trial of OCV-501, a WT1 peptide presented by helper T cells, in elderly AML (acute myeloid leukemia) patients in first remission, indicating no difference in 2-year disease-free survival (DSF) between the OCV-501 and placebo groups. Here, we analyzed 5-year outcome and biomarkers. Five-year DFS was 36.

A 66-year-old man diagnosed with immunoglobulin G4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) with diffuse intrahepatic bile duct stenosis and elevated serum IgG4 levels was referred for a further examination because of elevated serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels despite treatment with corticosteroids. An umbilical nodule was found on a physical examination and a biopsy showed adenocarcinoma. Although several imaging studies revealed no changes from prior studies, bile cytology collected by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed adenocarcinoma.

Article Synopsis
  • In Japan, cervical cancer was diagnosed in 8,000 women in 2018, and various surveillance methods were compared to standard guidelines from the U.S. and Europe.
  • The study analyzed records of 981 cervical cancer patients from 2009 to 2015, focusing on recurrence with different methods of regular surveillance over time.
  • Of the 84 patients who had recurrences, most were asymptomatic, and while several factors were initially thought to impact survival, only the primary treatment type was found to be significantly predictive for overall survival outcomes.

Background: Genomic alterations, including loss of function in chromosome band 11q22-23, are frequently observed in neuroblastoma, which is the most common extracranial childhood tumour. In neuroblastoma, ATM, a DNA damage response-associated gene located on 11q22-23, has been linked to tumorigenicity. Genetic changes in ATM are heterozygous in most tumours.

  • This study investigates the link between tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and outcomes in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) using data from a large Japanese registry.
  • A total of 3,735 AHF patients were analyzed, revealing a direct correlation where increased severity of TR led to higher risks of all-cause mortality and hospital readmissions for heart failure.
  • Despite the high prevalence of moderate to severe TR, very few patients underwent surgical intervention, highlighting a potential gap in treatment options for these individuals.

A 55-year old female patient was treated with methotrexate (MTX) and infliximab (IFX) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). She experienced unknown fever, generalized lymphadenopathy, and liver tumors. Histological examination of the inguinal lymph node and a liver tumor resulted in the pathological diagnosis of classic Hodgkin lymphoma, with many Reed-Sternberg cells with the positivity of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

Strong electromagnetic wave reflection loss concomitant with second emission pollution limits the wide applications of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding textiles. Decoration of textiles by using various dielectric materials has been found efficient for the development of highly efficient EMI shielding textiles, but it is still a challenge to obtain EMI shielding composites with thin thickness. A route of interfacial engineering may offer a twist to overcome these obstacles.

  • The OPTIVUS-Complex PCI study investigated the effectiveness of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) compared to standard PCI and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with multivessel coronary disease.
  • The study included 1,021 patients and analyzed outcomes through propensity score matching with historical PCI and CABG groups, focusing on major events like death and myocardial infarction.
  • Results showed that the IVUS-guided approach significantly reduced the risk of major adverse events at one year compared to both historical PCI and CABG controls, indicating better clinical outcomes.

Background/aim: Several prognostic risk factors have been recognized when using cisplatin-based conventional chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC); these include performance status (PS), liver metastasis, hemoglobin (Hb) levels, time from prior chemotherapy (TFPC), and other systemic inflammation scores including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). However, the benefit of these indicators for predicting outcome of immune checkpoint inhibitors is not fully understood. Here, we investigated the predictive value of the indicators in patients who received pembrolizumab for the treatment of advanced UC.

Background: High bleeding risk (HBR) and complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are major determinants for dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of HBR and complex PCI on short vs standard DAPT.

Methods: Subgroup analyses were conducted on the basis of Academic Research Consortium-defined HBR and complex PCI in the STOPDAPT-2 (Short and Optimal Duration of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy After Verulam's-Eluting Cobalt-Chromium Stent-2) Total Cohort, which randomly compared clopidogrel monotherapy after 1-month DAPT with 12-month DAPT with aspirin and clopidogrel after PCI.

Background: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) results in low back pain due to nerve root compression caused by nucleus pulposus degeneration. Chemonucleolysis of the nucleus pulposus by injection of condoliase is less invasive than surgery, but may cause disc degeneration. The purpose of the study was to examine outcomes of condoliase injection in patients in their teens and twenties using Pfirrmann criteria on MRI.
