The hydroperoxidation of alkyl enol ethers using -hydroxyphthalimide and molecular oxygen occurred in the absence of catalyst, initiator, or light. The reaction proceeds through a radical mechanism that is initiated by -hydroxyphthalimide-promoted autoxidation of the enol ether substrate. The resulting dioxetane products decompose in a chemiluminescent reaction that allows for photochemical activation of -hydroxyphthalimide in the absence of other light sources.

Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic form of regulated cell death caused by the failure of the glutathione-dependent lipid-peroxide-scavenging network. FINO is an endoperoxide-containing 1,2-dioxolane that can initiate ferroptosis selectively in engineered cancer cells. We investigated the mechanism and structural features necessary for ferroptosis initiation by FINO.

To investigate the association of age and other factors with thrombosis risk in antiphospholipid antibody (aPL) carriers, a retrospective observational study was conducted in a cohort of patients with medium-high aPL titres recruited in a tertiary care hospital. Assuming an age difference of 9.8 years between patients with and without thrombosis, we estimated that a sample size of 70 participants was required.

Introduction: We report a case of a particular lumbar and radicular pain revealing primary hyperparathyroidism and discuss its characteristics through a literature review.

Case Report: A 55-year-old woman was hospitalized for a nerve root pain associated with recent weight loss with normal physical examination. Biology showed no evidence for acute phase response and normal kidney and liver functions.

The copper(I)-catalyzed oxidation of alkenes with molecular oxygen and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) or N-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) provided α-oxygenated ketones. The reaction proceeded under a balloon of O2 at room temperature to furnish the dioxygenated products in 50-90% yield. These compounds, particularly the HOBt derivatives, can be further functionalized with phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur nucleophiles to give synthetically useful products.

Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of new cases of HIV infection diagnosed from 1997-2001 and compare them with AIDS cases (1991-2001).

Methods: Data were retrospectively collected on new cases of HIV infection detected in the Basque Country (1997-2001) and were compared with AIDS cases (1991-2001).

Results: A total of 912 new cases of HIV infection were diagnosed.

In an assessment of gender differences in schizophrenia, 85 outpatients (53 men and 32 women) with schizophrenia were evaluated for illness history, symptom severity, IQ, neurocognitive status, cerebral volume loss, and cortical asymmetry. Social functioning was assessed using marital status, independent living skills, and employment status. Significant gender differences were found, as women were on lower doses of neuroleptic medications and more frequently met criteria for paranoid and disorganized subtypes of schizophrenia than men.
