Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess a new automated cell-free DNA assay for screening maternal plasma to detect trisomies 21, 18, and 13 and determine fetal sex.
  • Involving 1,200 singleton pregnancies, the method analyzed maternal plasma with a non-sequencing approach based on imaging and counting chromosome targets, validated by cytogenetic testing and clinical examination.
  • Results showed the assay's excellent sensitivity and specificity for detecting the mentioned trisomies and accurate fetal sex classification, suggesting it could be simplified for broader use and reduced costs in population screening.

Individual cells of cyanobacteria or algae are supplied with light in a highly irregular fashion when grown in industrial-scale photobioreactors (PBRs). These conditions coincide with significant reductions in growth rate compared to the static light environments commonly used in laboratory experiments. We grew a dense culture of the model cyanobacterium sp.

Emergency department (ED) overcrowding is caused by external and/or internal factors. One critical internal factor, leading to longer length of stay (LOS) at ED (eg, frequent ED users), is the physician's uncertainty in management of patients with unclear diagnosis and or complex medical history. The aim of this study was to identify whether the causes of physicians' uncertainty was practical, patient-centred, medical, or cultural.

Background: Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of heart transplant recipient- and donor-derived cardiac biopsies may facilitate organ matching, graft failure prediction, and immunotolerance research. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of WGS based on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded endomyocardial biopsies.

Methods And Results: The study included serial donor- and recipient samples from patients who had undergone heart transplantation at Skane University Hospital, Lund, Sweden, between 1988 and 2009.

Background: The search for diagnostic biomarkers has been profiting from a growing number of high quality sequenced genomes and freely available bioinformatic tools. These can be combined with wet lab experiments for a rational search. Improved, point-of-care diagnostic tests for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), early case detection and surveillance are required.

Background: While recent years have seen a revolution in the treatment of metastatic cutaneous melanoma, no treatment has yet been able to demonstrate any prolonged survival in metastatic uveal melanoma. Thus, metastatic uveal melanoma remains a disease with an urgent unmet medical need. Reports of treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors have thus far been disappointing.

Objectives: First-generation radiofrequency renal denervation devices may have had limited efficacy due to incomplete circumferential ablation and dependence on individual operator technique. This study evaluated a next-generation catheter-based technology using ultrasound designed to maximize nerve coverage using circumferential ultrasound energy.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized, postmarket study evaluating the safety and efficacy of an endovascular ultrasound renal denervation system (Paradise) in patients who met the European Society of Hypertension/European Society of Cardiology definition of resistant hypertension.

The aim was to identify and characterize rare malignancies of the gallbladder, incidentally found at cholecystectomy, and describe the diagnostic work-up, treatment and outcome. Data from cholecystectomies during 2007-2014 registered in the Swedish Register for Gallstone Surgery (GallRiks) were analyzed for incidental cancer. For completion of the pathology report, data were linked with the Swedish Registry for Cancer in the liver and biliary tract (SweLiv) and/or the Swedish Cancer Registry.

Introduction: Community Case Management (CCM) aims to improve health outcomes among children under five with malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia, but its effectiveness in Malawi is limited by inconsistent standards of delivery characteristic of paper-based interventions. This may lead to negative impacts on child health outcomes and inefficient use of health system resources. This study evaluated the acceptability and impact of the Supporting LIFE Community Case Management App (SL eCCM App) by Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) and caregivers in two districts of Northern Malawi.

Protein N-terminal acetylation is a co- and posttranslational modification, conserved among eukaryotes. It determines the functional fate of many proteins including their stability, complex formation, and subcellular localization. N-terminal acetyltransferases (NATs) transfer an acetyl group to the N-termini of proteins, and the major NATs in yeast and humans are NatA, NatB, and NatC.

Background: Retrospective studies suggest that conditioning therapy with busulfan plus melphalan could result in longer progression-free survival compared with melphalan alone in patients with multiple myeloma undergoing autologous haemopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT). We aimed to test this hypothesis in a randomised trial.

Methods: The primary objective of the study was to compare progression-free survival with conditioning of busulfan plus melphalan with melphalan alone in patients with multiple myeloma.

Background: A calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)-free immunosuppressive regimen has been demonstrated to improve renal function early after heart transplantation, but long-term outcome of such a strategy has not been well described.

Methods: In the randomized SCHEDULE trial, de novo heart transplant recipients received (1) everolimus with reduced-exposure CNI (cyclosporine) followed by CNI withdrawal at week 7-11 posttransplant or (2) standard-exposure cyclosporine, both with mycophenolate mofetil and corticosteroids; 95/115 randomized patients were followed up at 5-7 years posttransplant.

Results: Mean measured glomerular filtration rate was 74.

Background: Pharmacokinetics (PK) is the study of the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs. Many chemotherapeutic agents have a sensitive PK index, in which a small margin in blood concentrations is the difference between nontherapeutic, therapeutic, and adverse outcomes.

Objectives: This article will provide an overview of evidence-based approaches to the collection of PK samples, monitoring of PK levels, and the resulting management of patients undergoing PK testing.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how renal denervation (RDN) affects muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and blood pressure (BP) during mental stress in patients with resistant hypertension.
  • - Results showed that while systolic BP decreased after RDN, there were no significant changes in MSNA at rest or during mental stress before and after the procedure.
  • - The findings suggest that the BP-lowering effect of RDN is not related to changes in sympathetic nerve activity in response to stress among the studied patients.
