Pathology residency training has been criticized for having too little opportunities for resident autonomy. As graduate medical education moves to competency-based models measuring competency and giving autonomy for specific tasks will be important. To determine how much autonomy residents are currently granted we surveyed pathology residency directors with regard to a list of usual pathology tasks and compared responses with those of a similar survey from 2018.

Background: Regional myocardial work (MW) is not measured in the right ventricle (RV) due to a lack of high spatial resolution regional strain (RS) estimates throughout the ventricle. We present a cineCT-based approach to evaluate regional RV performance and demonstrate its ability to phenotype three complex populations: end-stage LV failure (HF), chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), and repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF).

Methods: 49 patients (19 HF, 11 CTEPH, 19 rTOF) underwent cineCT and right heart catheterization (RHC).

Article Synopsis
  • Ru clusters are important for creating efficient catalysts because their small size allows for the use of less precious material while still providing effective active sites.
  • Retaining the monodispersity of these clusters after deposition is difficult due to tendencies for agglomeration and encapsulation, particularly influenced by surface energy.
  • The study explores how various methods, such as chemical vapor deposition and cluster source depositions onto TiO substrates, affect the encapsulation of Ru clusters and emphasizes the potential for catalytic reactions with thin titania overlayer, analyzed using techniques like XPS and STEM.

Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are observable clinical skills and/or procedures that have been introduced into medical education at the student and resident levels in most specialties to determine readiness to advance into residency or independent practice, respectively. This publication describes the process and outcomes of a pilot study looking at the feasibility of using two anatomic pathology and two clinical pathology EPAs in pathology residency in 6 pathology residency programs that volunteered for the study. Faculty development on EPAs and their assessment was provided to pilot program faculty, and EPA assessment tools were developed and used by the pilot programs.

Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are observable activities that define the practice of medicine and provide a framework of evaluation that has been incorporated into US medical school curricula in both undergraduate and graduate medical education. This manuscript describes the development of an entrustment scale and formative and summative evaluations for pathology EPAs, outlines a process for faculty development that was employed in a pilot study implementing two Anatomic Pathology and two Clinical Pathology EPAs in volunteer pathology residency programs, and provides initial validation data for the proposed pathology entrustment scales. Prior to implementation, faculty development was necessary to train faculty on the entrustment scale for each given activity.

Neoadjuvant intratumoral cisplatin has the potential to generate substantial cytotoxicity and immune priming within the tumor environment, while minimizing systemic, off-target, adverse events. We initiated a phase 1A, 3+3 dose-ranging study of neoadjuvant, intratumoral cisplatin, delivered through endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy, in the same procedure as the initial diagnosis. There were no dose-limiting toxicity identified at the 20mg level.

Background: Injury in sport is an inherent risk to participation, and it can have devastating consequences for the athlete, both mentally and physically. Previous research has found that impairments in well-being can increase the risk of injury, and that various forms of mindfulness training and practice can improve well-being and mental health in various populations.

Hypothesis: Mindfulness would be associated with greater well-being and lower risk of injury.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving 31 neonates with congenital kidney failure at Children's of Alabama found that 5 required ECMO due to severe respiratory distress; diagnoses included kidney abnormalities like posterior urethral valves and renal dysplasia.
  • * Among the 5 patients on ECMO, 4 survived with improved pulmonary conditions, 3 received kidney transplants, and findings suggest that thorough supportive care can lead to better long-term outcomes, challenging the notion of nonviability.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide and remains a critical public health challenge. The burden of disease caused by smoking is disproportionately borne by persons living with mental illness. Public health efforts to address smoking have not historically translated to a significant reduction in smoking prevalence among patients with mental illness.

Patients who undergo implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) are at a high risk for right ventricular failure (RVF), presumably due to poor right ventricular (RV) function before surgery. Cine computerized tomography (cineCT) can be used to evaluate RV size, function, and endocardial strain. However, CT-based strain measures in patients undergoing workup for LVAD implantation have not been evaluated.

Background: With increasing life expectancy, patients with HIV are more commonly acquiring other chronic diseases, such as end-stage lung disease, for which transplant may be the only effective solution. Until recently, HIV infection was considered a contraindication to lung transplant (LTx). As LTx in people living with HIV (PLWH) becomes more common, there remain limited data on outcomes in this population.

Streamflow monitoring networks provide information for a wide range of public interests in river and streams. A general approach to evaluate monitoring for different interests is developed to support network planning and design. The approach defines three theoretically distinct information metrics (coverage, resolution, and representation) based on the spatial distribution of a variable of interest.
